Out-Of-Touch Bruce Braley Sneers At Iowa Farmers

- March 25, 2014

Video Surfaced Today Of Iowa Senate Candidate Bruce Braley Mocking Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) As “A Farmer From Iowa Who Never Went To Law School.” Video shot at a private fundraiser for Bruce Braley caught the Iowa Democrat warning that “a farmer from Iowa who never went to law school” might become the next judiciary committee chairman. (Jennifer Jacobs, “Video Captures Braley Criticizing Grassley As ‘A Farmer From Iowa’,” Des Moines Register, 3/25/14)

  • Watch Braley Insult Sen. Grassley And Iowa Farmers

Observers Are Already Predicting The Video Could Seriously Damage Braley’s Chances In November. “Braley is seen as the de facto Democratic nominee in the race to succeed retiring Sen. Tom Harkin, a Democrat who held his seat since 1985. His unchallenged primary is in stark contrast to the Republican race that has become one of the messiest in the country.  Despite Iowa's centrist tendencies, Braley is heavily favored to win, and wasn't considered a major pickup opportunity for Republicans. That may change now, thanks to this video.” (Matt Vasilogambros, “Iowa Democrat Dismisses Chuck Grassley As 'A Farmer From Iowa Who Never Went to Law School,’” National Journal, 3/25/14)

  • “Virtually Everyone In The State Has Family Or Professional Ties To Farmers And The Rural Economy. That’s What Makes So Potentially Damaging The Statement Made By Democratic U.S. Senate Candidate Bruce Braley Captured On Video During A Private Fundraiser He Attended In Texas.” (John McCormick, “Braley v Grassley: Iowa Trial Lawyer’s `Farmer’ Slap Starts Brushfire,” Bloomberg, 3/25/14)

BRALEY WAS SNEERING AT A SIGNIFICANT NUMBER OF HIS OWN VOTERS

According To The Iowa Farm Bureau, Agribusiness Contributes $72 Billion Annually To Iowa’s Economy And Supports 1 In 6 Jobs In Iowa. “It’s really just dollars and sense ... agriculture (and its related industries) is Iowa’s biggest economic engine, pumping $72 billion a year into Iowa’s economy and creating 1 out of every 6 jobs in the state.” (Iowa Farm Bureau, Accessed 3/25/14)

As Of 2010, There Were 92,400 Farms In Iowa. (Iowa Quick Facts, State of Iowa, Accessed 3/25/14)

As Of 2007, Agriculture Employed 133,996 People In Iowa. (Iowa Quick Facts, State of Iowa, Accessed 3/25/14)

Braley Must Have Thought He Was Safe Among Fellow Trial Lawyers

Braley Was Addressing A Room Full Of Trial Lawyers In Texas. “Braley says in the video, apparently to a room of trial lawyers in at a fundraiser in Texas: ‘To put this in stark contrast, if you help me win this race, you may have someone with your background, your experience, your voice, someone’s who’s  been literally fighting tort reform for 30 years in a visible and public way on the Senate Judiciary Committee or you might have a farmer from Iowa who never went to law school, never practiced law, serving as the next chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Because if Democrats lose the majority, Chuck Grassley will be the next chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee.’” (Jennifer Jacobs, “Video Captures Braley Criticizing Grassley As ‘A Farmer From Iowa’,” Des Moines Register, 3/25/14)

Braley Is A Trial Lawyer Himself, And The Former President Of The Iowa Trial Lawyers Association. “But Braley, the one-time president of the Iowa Trial Lawyers Association, never mentioned his legal background during the meetings, saying later that his career was widely advertised by his opponents as he was seeking election to Congress in 2006.” (Thomas Beaumont, “Braley, Constituents Debate Tort Reform Merits,” Des Moines Register, 9/3/09)

Lawyers Are Braley’s Biggest Contributors, Funneling $1,122,748 To His Senate Campaign Alone. “U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley, a popular Republican senator from Iowa, is the ranking member on the committee. Braley’s biggest donors this election cycle to date are lawyers and law firms, according to OpenSecrets.org. They’ve funneled $1,122,748 into his campaign.” (Jennifer Jacobs, “Video Captures Braley Criticizing Grassley As ‘A Farmer From Iowa’,” Des Moines Register, 3/25/14)

  • Since His First Election In 2006, Braley Has Raked In Over $4 Million From Lawyers And Law Firms. (Opensecrets.org, Accessed 3/25/14)

IT’S NOT BRALEY’S FIRST OUT-OF-TOUCH REMARK: HE ONCE LAMENTED THAT THE HOUSE GYM HAD SUSPENDED TOWEL SERVICE

During The October Government Shutdown, Braley Complained That There Was No Towel Service In The House Gym. LYNN SWEET: “Let me ask you this, there’s now a bill out there by Congressman Patrick Murphy of Florida and Bill Foster of Illinois to remove the essential status for the employees of the House gym so that you just don’t have the personnel there.  What do you think of that?” BRALEY: “They must not have been down to the gym lately.  There’s hardly anybody working down there.  There’s no towel service.  So we’re doing our own laundry down there.” (Bill Press Show, 10/9/13)
