Big Government And Broken Promises

- June 18, 2013

Obama Promised A Leaner And More Responsible Government - But All He Delivered Was A Bloated Government Lacking Accountability

OBAMA PROMISED TO BRING A SMARTER GOVERNMENT TO WASHINGTON

Obama: "I Ran For Office Pledging To Make Our Government Leaner And Smarter And More Consumer-Friendly." OBAMA: "I ran for office pledging to make our government leaner and smarter and more consumer-friendly. And from the moment I got here, I saw up close what many of you know to be true: The government we have is not the government that we need." (President Barack Obama, Remarks On Government Reform, Washington, DC, 1/13/12)

  • Obama Said "What We Should Be Asking Is Not Whether We Need 'Big Government' Or A 'Small Government,' But How We Can Create A Smarter And Better Government." OBAMA: "So, class of 2010, what we should be asking is not whether we need 'big government' or a 'small government,' but how we can create a smarter and better government." (President Barack Obama, Remarks By The President At University Of Michigan Spring Commencement , Ann Arbor, MI, 5/1/10)

  • Obama Said "The Long-Running Debate Between Big Government And Small Government Misses The Point; It Isn't Relevant To Today's Challenges." OBAMA: "Peter also shares my view that the long-running debate between big government and small government misses the point; it isn't relevant to today's challenges. The real debate is about how we make government smarter, more effective, and more efficient in the 21st century." (President Barack Obama, Remarks By The President In Selection Of Jack Lew To Be Director Of OMB , Washington, DC, 7/13/10)

Obama Said "I Think There's Going To Have To Be A Fundamentally Different Approach To Things. And I Described Earlier What I Think That Approach Has To Be. It's Not An Issue Of Big Government Versus Small Government. It's An Issue Of Smart Government." NPR's STEVE INSKEEP: "Let me ask you about two or three years out. I'm thinking of the 1990s when President Clinton famously said, 'The era of big government is over.' Because of the medium- and long-term need to restrain or cut spending, are you going to be in a position where the era of big government is going to be over again; there's going to have to be a fundamentally different approach to things?" OBAMA: "I think there's going to have to be a fundamentally different approach to things. And I described earlier what I think that approach has to be. It's not an issue of big government versus small government. It's an issue of smart government." (President Barack Obama, Interview With Steve Inskeep, NPR's "Morning Edition," 12/10/10)

Obama: "We Don't Need A Big Government Agenda Or A Small Government Agenda…" OBAMA: "So, Colorado, we know what change is. We know what the future requires. We don't need a big government agenda or a small government agenda -- we need a middle class agenda that rewards the values of hard work and responsibility." (President Barack Obama, Remarks By The President At A Campaign Event , Boulder, CO, 12/1/12)

AND OBAMA PROMISED THAT HE WOULD "BE JUDGED BY RESULTS" AND WAS "RESPONSIBLE" FOR THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT

Obama Said That Part Of His New Course For Washington Was "Making Sure That When I Screw Up That I'm Taking Responsibility For It." OBAMA: "It's not going to be perfect. There are going to be bumps and fits and starts on this thing. But as long as I stay focused on them and putting them back to work, making sure that they have health insurance, making sure their kids can afford college, cleaning up attitudes around here, including making sure that when I screw up that I'm taking responsibility for it. I think that people will feel that three or four or five years down the road that you know we set a new course." (President Barack Obama, Interview With Katie Couric Of CBS News, 2/3/09)

Obama Said "I Expect To Be Judged By Results. And There's No -- I'm Not Going To Make Any Excuses." OBAMA: "I expect to be judged by results. And there's no -- I'm not going to make any excuses. If stuff hasn't worked and people don't feel like I've led the country in the right direction, then you'll have a new President." (President Obama, Remarks At Fort Myers Town Hall, Fort Myers, Fl, 2/10/09)

Obama: "As President Of The United States, It's Pretty Clear To Me That I'm Responsible For Folks Who Are Working In The Federal Government And You Know, Harry Truman Said The Buck Stops With You." OBAMA: "Well, here's what I know, we were just talking about responsibility and as president of the United States, it's pretty clear to me that I'm responsible for folks who are working in the federal government and you know, Harry Truman said the buck stops with you." ("President Obama Says Romney Should Answer Bain Capital Questions," WJLA, 7/13/12)

  • Obama: "One Of The Things You Learn Is, You Are Ultimately Responsible For The Conduct Of Your Operations…" OBAMA: "Ultimately Mr. Romney, I think, is going to have to answer those questions, because if he aspires to being president one of the things you learn is, you are ultimately responsible for the conduct of your operations, but again that's probably a question that he's going to have to answer and I think that's a legitimate part of the campaign." ("President Obama Says Romney Should Answer Bain Capital Questions," WJLA, 7/13/12)
