Chairwoman McDaniel Demands Investigation into Nevada Election Chaos

- May 20, 2020

WASHINGTON— In a letter sent today to Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford, RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel, in partnership with the Nevada Republican Party, demanded an investigation into troubling events in Clark County that may have violated Nevada’s open public meeting and election laws.

This letter is the latest legal action taken in Nevada where Democrats have seized on the coronavirus pandemic in an attempt to push through their long-sought partisan election agenda.  The Democrat National Committee and other liberal groups have sued the Nevada Secretary of State to willfully ignore and violate Nevada election law by suspending prosecution of ballot harvesters, sending ballots to all inactive voters, suspending verification procedures for absentee ballots such as signature matching, and demanding more than one in-person voting center, despite the state’s all-mail order for the June 9 primary.

The RNC intervened to defend state law and protect these important election safeguards, but with just 48 hours until the trial was set to begin, the Democrat-dominated Clark County Commission announced that they struck a shady backroom deal with the Nevada Democratic Party and outside liberal organizations to make changes to the primary election that the Democrats were demanding.

Democrat Party bosses are now forcing Nevada’s largest county to waste over $300,000 of taxpayer money to mail ballots to all inactive voters and hire ballot harvesters.

This is particularly troubling as media reports have confirmed that an excess of ballots sent to inactive voters are now littering Las Vegas’s streets, piling up in trash cans and apartment complexes, leaving Nevada’s elections open and vulnerable to fraud.

Excess Ballots Pile Up in Nevada

The letter sent today demands that Attorney General Ford:

  1. Investigate under NRS 241.039 whether the Clark County Commissioners violated Nevada’s open public meeting law when they decided, behind closed doors, to capitulate to the Democrats’ demands without notifying, broadcasting, or allowing citizens to provide their input.
  2. Investigate which Clark County officials made this decision, when it was made, and which outside groups were consulted in the manner.
  3. Investigate whether local officials have maintained the election’s integrity with the decision to send ballots to all inactive voters.
  4. Investigate if civil penalties should be instituted against anyone who has tried to exploit these circumstances under provision NRS Title 24.

Attorney General Ford himself has said that "our democracy can only function with meaningful transparency and accountability to our citizens," and we agree. The RNC is requesting a prompt reply and thorough investigation on these important questions.

"Americans deserve to have confidence in their elections, and shady backroom deals made to undermine our elections process do nothing but erode public trust in democracy," said RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel. "The American people deserve answers and we fully intend to get them."

Background:

The RNC continues to fight back against the Democrats’ assault on the integrity of our elections by intervening in left-wing backed lawsuits across the country.  The RNC recently doubled its legal budget to $20 million to fight these efforts, which you can learn more about at www.ProtectTheVote.com.
