Chairwoman McDaniel: Schools Are Still Not Open and Students Are Suffering
MACCALLUM: Ronna, my question is what are they waiting for? They have had hundreds of millions of dollars allocated to make these safety changes. They were supposed to happen last summer when everybody was home. They've been home since March. So what in God’s name is going on with this money? They have $67.5 billion allocated to make schools safe. That money has been there for some time. What is going on?
CHAIRWOMAN MCDANIEL: Like you said, Martha there's money that has not been spent. Over $50 billion that has not been spent that’s been allocated for the schools. What is taking so long? Joe Biden gave a signature speech in September of 2020 calling on President Trump to open the schools, calling it a national crisis, and he came into office with no plan. The schools still aren't open and kids are suffering. I'm a testament to that. I see my kids. They're not learning in the virtual classroom at the same level as kids in person. You know who is going in person? The private schools.
MACCALLUM: Yeah, and the Catholic schools.
CHAIRWOMAN MCDANIEL: So we’re also creating a disparity. There's a disparity with kids.
MACCALLUM: Somehow they got ventilation and they’re making do, and it’s the city school unions that are refusing to go back. And I know there's a big push for school choice as well that a lot of Republican legislatures are saying, you know what, these parents pay taxes, they should be able to take those education taxes and if they don't want to stick around and wait for the teachers to come back, they should be able to choose the school of their choice that is open to send them to. Is that gaining traction?
CHAIRWOMAN MCDANIEL: Republicans have always been pro-school choice, but again, the Democrats are so beholden to the unions. What we have learned through all of this, is that the unions are not standing up for the kids. It is not about kids first. It's about unions first.
