Sen. Schumer is leading his colleagues towards voting for a government shutdown over a yet-to-be completed DACA deal. An interesting tactic given the fact that we are not up against a deadline for a DACA deal.
Here is a reminder of what Schumer said just a few years ago about this exact strategy…
In 2013, Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) criticized the idea of shutting down the government over an immigration issue saying, “We [Democrats] could say we're shutting down the government, we're not going to raise the debt ceiling until you pass immigration reform. It would be governmental chaos.” (ABC’s “This Week,” 10/6/13)
In 2013, Schumer criticized government shutdowns saying, “I believe in immigration reform. What if I persuaded my caucus to say, ‘I'm going to shut the government down, I am going to not pay our bills unless I get my way?’ It's a politics of idiocy, of confrontation, of paralysis.” (CNN’s “The Lead,” 10/16/13)
In 2015, Schumer criticized Republicans for wanting to tie immigration reform to a government funding bill saying, “Do not hold hostage the funding of the Department of Homeland Security that keeps us safe over an unrelated fight on immigration.” (Press Conference with Senators Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), 2/5/15)
