Dems Then & Now On The Danger Of FBI Leaks

Mike Reed - June 15, 2017

Last night’s Washington Post story represents yet another leak in a long series of leaks coming from the investigative teams.

The leaks are obviously illegal and damaging to the process.  But they beg another question, what is the motivation of the leakers?

It should be obvious to most that the motive of these leakers is to undermine the President.

And, it should make you wonder, if they had a real case, would they be leaking information in this manner?

Members of the left used to warn about leaks and innuendo coming from FBI investigations.  Unfortunately, it seems those days are long past….

In November 2016, President Obama Warned Against FBI “Leaks” And “Innuendo” After The Agency's Decision To Disclose Its New Review Into Emails That Could Be Relevant To Hillary Clinton's Use Of A Private Server While She Was Secretary Of State. “President Barack Obama warned against FBI ‘leaks’ and ‘innuendo’ in his first public comments about the agency's decision to disclose its new review into emails that could be relevant to Hillary Clinton's use of a private server while she was secretary of state. Speaking to NowThisNews in an interview released Wednesday, Obama said he didn't want to meddle in the law enforcement process. But he criticized any action that might allow intimations or suggestions -- rather than facts -- to pervade the public's view of the case.” (Kevin Liptak, “Obama On FBI: We Don't Operate On Innuendo,” CNN, 11/2/16)

  • “‘I Do Think That There Is A Norm That When There Are Investigations, We Don't Operate On Innuendo And We Don't Operate On Incomplete Information And We Don't Operate On Leaks,’ Obama Said In The Interview, Which Was Taped Tuesday. ‘We Operate Based On Concrete Decisions That Are Made.’” (Kevin Liptak, “Obama On FBI: We Don't Operate On Innuendo,” CNN, 11/2/16)

In November 2016, Representatives Elijah Cummings And John Conyers Penned A Letter Asking The Justice Department To Investigate The FBI For Potential Leaks Over The Hillary Clinton Email And Foundation Controversy. “Two top House Democrats are asking the Justice Department to investigate leaks from within the FBI to the Trump campaign and the news media about bureau probes of Hillary Clinton and the Clinton Foundation. ‘It is absolutely unacceptable for the FBI to leak unsubstantiated — and in some cases, false — information about one presidential candidate to benefit the other candidate,’ Rep. John Conyers, the ranking minority member on the House Judiciary Committee, and Rep. Elijah Cummings, the ranking minority member on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, wrote in a Friday letter to Michael Horowitz, the Justice Department’s inspector general.” (Michael Isikoff, “House Dems Want Probe Of FBI Leaks About Clinton,” Yahoo, 11/4/16)

The Congressmen Wrote To The Justice Department, “[W]e Are Calling On Your Office To Conduct A Thorough Investigation To Identify The Sources Of These And Other Leaks From The FBI And To Recommend Appropriate Action.” “The congressmen also pointed to a Wednesday report by Fox News anchor Bret Baier that said FBI sources told him the bureau was ‘actively and aggressively’ investigating the Clinton Foundation and that an indictment was ‘likely.’ On Friday, Baier partially retracted the story, saying his report of a ‘likely’ indictment was a ‘mistake.’ ‘These unauthorized and inaccurate leaks from within the FBI, particularly so close to a presidential election, are unprecedented,’ the congressmen wrote. ‘For these reasons, we are calling on your office to conduct a thorough investigation to identify the sources of these and other leaks from the FBI and to recommend appropriate action.’” (Michael Isikoff, “House Dems Want Probe Of FBI Leaks About Clinton,” Yahoo, 11/4/16)

“Minnesota Sen. Al Franken On Sunday [November, 2016] Said He Expects That The Senate Judiciary Committee Will Hold Hearings On What He Described As ‘Troubling’ And ‘Rogue’ Conduct Within The FBI.  Franken, a Democrat, told CNN’s Jake Tapper that it was ‘troubling’ that FBI Director James Comey decided to inform congressional leaders that his agency was reviewing new materials related to its investigation of Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server so close to the November election.” (Madeline Conway, “Franken Expects Hearings On FBI Conduct,” Politico, 11/6/16)

“But Franken Argued That It Is ‘More Troubling’ That There May Be ‘Rogue Elements Within The FBI’ Leaking Information About The Case, Which Has Dominated News Cycles To The Chagrin Of Democrats And The Clinton Campaign. The senator didn't directly connect Comey to these elements but did suggest there might be a failure of leadership on his part.” (Madeline Conway, “Franken Expects Hearings On FBI Conduct,” Politico, 11/6/16)

In Late October 2016, Rep. Pelosi Stated, “The Public Interest Would Be Served By The FBI Providing The Facts, Rather Than Allowing Republicans To Stoke Innuendo And Falsehoods…” “Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement in response to FBI Director James Comey’s letter to eight Republican Committee Chairmen: … ‘The Director of the FBI himself stated that, “the FBI cannot yet assess whether or not this material may be significant.”  Furthermore, there is not any indication that this review involves Secretary Clinton’s own use of emails.  The public interest would be served by the FBI providing the facts, rather than allowing Republicans to stoke innuendo and falsehoods 11 days away from a presidential election.’” (“Pelosi Statement On FBI Letter To GOP Congressional Chairmen,” Representative Nancy Pelosi Press Release, 10/28/16)

Senator Harry Reid Accused FBI Director Comey Of Breaking The Hatch Act, Which Prohibits Partisan Politics By Government Employees. “Senate Minority Leader Harry M. Reid on Sunday accused FBI Director James B. Comey of breaking federal law in disclosing possible new evidence in the Hillary Clinton email investigation. Reid (D-Nev.) said in a letter sent to Comey that his disclosure to Congress, made 11 days before the election, might have violated the Hatch Act, which prohibits partisan politicking by government employees. ‘Your actions in recent months have demonstrated a disturbing double standard for the treatment of sensitive information, with what appears to be a clear intent to aid one political party over another,’ Reid wrote. ‘I am writing to inform you that my office has determined that these actions may violate the Hatch Act, which bars FBI officials from using their official authority to influence an election. Through your partisan actions, you may have broken the law.’” (Mike Debonis, “Harry Reid Says Comey ‘May Have Broken The Law’ By Disclosing New Clinton-Related Emails,” Washington Post, 10/30/16)
