She’s arguably the most qualified nominee for the position ever, but Democrats are waging a war against Gina Haspel, the 33-year CIA veteran who will be the first female to head the agency after she’s confirmed.
If their opposition were actually based on post-9/11 enhanced interrogations, why did so many Democrats vote to confirm President Obama’s nominee in 2013? Back then, liberal groups like the ACLU blasted John Brennan for his role at the “top echelons of the CIA,” including his “complicity” in knowing “intimate details” of post-9/11 enhanced interrogations. (Brennan was deputy executive CIA director, the #4 in command, from 2001 to 2003.)
50 members of the Democratic Caucus voted for Brennan, and 36 of them are still in the Senate today:
Worth noting that all 8 Democrats on the Senate Intelligence Committee voted to approved Brennan, including 5 sitting Democrats: Feinstein (D-CA), Heinrich (D-NM), King (I-ME), Warner (D-VA), and Wyden (D-OR).
So what’s changed? Is it because she’s a woman, or because they’re no longer able to put national security above the partisan obstruction their far-left base demands? Democrats should listen to Brennan himself:
Senators: Show that you put country above politics. Gina Haspel is a competent, experienced, & highly qualified intelligence professional. Ask her tough questions, listen to her answers, & then decide but don’t penalize her for previous policy decisions or because DT picked her.— John O. Brennan (@JohnBrennan) May 7, 2018
