WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Friday, June 28, 2013, interns from around Washington, D.C. will convene outside the Hart Senate Office Building to protest Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and the Democrat-controlled Senate’s refusal to prevent student loan rates from doubling.
Seven million students are about to have their current rate of 3.4 percent double to 6.8 percent if Senate Majority Leader Reid and the Democrat-controlled Senate do not pass a solution. While Majority Leader Reid blocks bipartisan efforts to bring any bill to the floor that would prevent the loan rate from doubling, Republicans in the House already passed HR 1911: Smarter Solutions for Students Act, which was modeled after the President’s approach in his 2014 budget. Senator Reid only has three days to act, and students are fed up with his failed leadership.
