Lois Lerner, James Comey…have Democrats learned nothing from empowering unelected officials with abilities that are easily abused to influence elections?
Apparently not. The Democrats’ H.R. 1 power grab would give unelected commissioners increased regulatory control over speech – a fundamental right of American democracy.
The Democrats’ proposed legislation would nationalize U.S. elections and break the 6-member bipartisan composition of the FEC. It would establish a 5-member agency with the Chair of the Commission chosen by the president. This “Speech Czar” would have extreme authorities over the Commission and have the power to compel testimony and issue subpoenas.
Under the last Democrat administration, unelected officials used tax law to target conservative groups and Democrat opposition research to launch a baseless investigation to undermine an incoming administration. Now, Democrats want to expand the power of unelected bureaucrats, but this time, over speech itself.
With this increased power, history will only repeat itself. And that’s just one thing that’s wrong with H.R. 1:

Our freedom of speech does not come from the government – it is inherent in our rights as Americans. Giving the government unaccountable authority over this right would not protect it, it would threaten it.
