ICYMI: President Trump continues to stand alongside Pennsylvanians in their fight against the opioid epidemic. Just last week, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services released over $400 million in federal funding to combat opioids – including over $6 million helping communities across Pennsylvania.
Communities these investments will impact include Shelocta, Meadville, and many more..
According to HHS, these awards support the Five-Point Opioid Strategy, introduced under President Trump in 2017, to help community health centers, rural hospitals and academic institutions continue their work on the front lines against the opioid epidemic.
These investments are just the tip of the iceberg of the President’s work to battle the crisis. By declaring the opioid epidemic a public health emergency, he has not only empowered local communities’ efforts, but mobilized his entire administration in this important fight.
Here are just a few other ways the President is addressing the epidemic:
- President Trump has secured $6 billion in new funding to end this crisis and has directed this funding into increased treatment, prevention and recovery resources.
- Last year, President Trump worked alongside Congress to pass the SUPPORT Act, which is the single largest legislative package addressing a single drug crisis in history.
- President Trump is committed to combating the opioid crisis by securing our borders, ports of entry, and waterways to crack down on drug smuggling.
- The number of first-time heroin users ages 12 and older fell by more than 50 percent in July 2017. Between President Trump’s inauguration and October 2018, high-dose opioid prescriptions fell by 16 percent.
“President Trump stands with Pennsylvanians in their fight against the opioid epidemic and is committed to providing essential resources to combat this crisis on the front lines.” - RNC Spokesperson Christiana Purves
