On NATO Members Paying Their Fair Share
PRESIDENT TRUMP: "NATO members must finally contribute their fair share and meet their financial obligations. But 23 of the 28 member nations are still not paying what they should be paying and what they are supposed to be paying for their defense.
This is not fair to the people and taxpayers of the United States.
And I never asked once what the new NATO headquarters cost. I refuse to do that, but it is beautiful."
As A Presidential Candidate, Trump Promised To Tell NATO Countries That They Need To Pay Their Fair Share. Donald Trump continued his calls Wednesday for NATO countries to contribute more to the alliance, and CNN's Reality Check Team looked into his claim. Speaking in Doral, Florida, Trump said, "I think NATO's great. But it's got to be modernized. And countries that we're protecting have to pay what they're supposed to be paying." It's a position that Trump has stated several times before, saying he believes that the US is getting "ripped off" and that some NATO members are getting an unfair "free ride." (CNN, 7/27/16)
