Thelma, Louise, & Geithner

- December 2, 2012

Today, Secretary Of The Treasury Tim Geithner Couldn't Promise That Obama And The Democrats Wouldn't Send The Nation Off The Fiscal Cliff. FOX's CHRIS WALLACE: "Last question, can you promise that we will not go over the cliff?" TREASURY SECRETARY TIMOTHY GEITHNER: "No, I can't promise that. That's a decision that lies in the hands of the Republicans that are now opposing increases in tax rates. If they recognize the reality that we can't afford to extend those tax rates, then we have the basis for an agreement that will be very good for the American people." WALLACE: "And the president bears no responsibility? It's all up to the Republicans?" GEITHNER: "Chris, ask yourself this question: why does it make sense for the country to force tax increases on all Americans because a small group of Republicans want to extend tax rates for two percent of Americans? Why does that make any sense? There's no reason why that should happen. We can't afford those tax rates. That's like the deep tragic lesson of the last decade. We can't afford them, so we're not going to get through it - we're not going to the end now without a recognition from Republicans of that basic reality. And that's going to be the responsible thing to do. And my judgment is they are going to do it because there's no alternative to that."... Continue Reading »

And this is where there's a difference because Governor Romney's central economic plan calls for a $5 trillion tax cut, on top of the extension of the Bush tax cuts, so that's another $2 trillion, and $2 trillion in additional military spending that the military hasn't asked for. And let's put up some of what the Medicare actuary says. They say that 15 percent of Medicare providers will be unprofitable by 2019. 25 percent of Medicare providers will be unprofitable by 2030. And the Medicare actuary concludes - this is his quote - in practice Medicare providers could not sustain continued negative margins and, absent legislative changes, would have to withdraw - withdraw - from providing services to Medicare beneficiaries, merge with other provider groups or shift substantial portions of the Medicare costs it to their non-Medicare non-Medicaid providers. Highlights From RNC Conference Call on Obama's Defense Cuts

- August 2, 2012

"What we're seeing here are these defense cuts which are disproportionately hitting our armed services. It is a Washington deal which is really the latest failure in Washington. Here's what this really means to Virginians - over 200,000 hard working men and women in Virginia are at risk of losing their jobs because of this deal. these are jobs that are feeding families, they're providing customers for small businesses, they really form the building blocks for our economy and that's one of the reasons I opposed this deal from the beginning, because it disproportionately targeted our military which is already getting cuts of nearly $500 billion dollars. And then if this so called commission or super committee failed, not only were there no spending cuts but if they failed half the cuts were going to come from the paramount responsibility of the federal government which is our national defense. And also be devastating to jobs in Virginia, Northern Virginia, where President Obama is coming in today, as well as Hampton Roads and elsewhere in Virginia, but Northern Virginia and Hampton Roads will be the hardest hit.... OBAMA’S CLAIM: President Obama Claimed That The Buffett Rule Would “Stabilize Our Debt And Deficits For The Next Decade.” OBAMA: “What I’ve said is this is a very simple principle that everybody should understand: Warren Buffett’s secretary shouldn’t pay a lower [sic] tax rate than Warren Buffett. A teacher making $50,000 a year, or a firefighter making $50,000 a year or $60,000, shouldn’t be paying a higher tax rate than somebody making $50 million a year. And that basic principle of fairness, if applied to our tax code, could raise enough money that not only do we pay for our jobs bill, but we also stabilize our debt and deficits for the next decade. And as I said when I made the announcement, this is not politics; this is math.” ... Continue Reading »

National Journal: The Buffett Rule Won’t Get You a Job. “On the seventh and final page of its background report on the Buffett Rule, out this morning, the Obama administration finally dives into what it calls “the economic rationale” for imposing a new minimum tax rate on millionaires. If you’re an unemployed American, that placement should be your first red flag. The second should be the rationale itself. Once you read it, you’ll realize the Buffett Rule has nothing to do with helping you, or 13 million other Americans looking for work as of March, find a job.” http://bit.ly/HYu2HH... Obama’s Deliberate Lack Of Leadership Dooms Super Committee

- November 21, 2011

“Well, you know, Mika, it's the leader – if – I was the governor of the state of West Virginia, people relied on me to make, set the tone of what we were going to do and push it through and everybody has a different style. I'm not going to criticize it, but people are going to judge the results we receive, and if we don't get results, we're in trouble. Right now, if the committee of 12 is not able to come to an agreement, we have about 140 members of congress, about 44 senators and about a 100 members of the house that are saying go big, be bold, stand tall, let’s pull out Simpson and Bowles and let's vote on this thing, let's move it forward for the next generation.” ... Democrats and Republicans are coming together in opposition to President Obama’s tax increases that he proposed yesterday to pay for his $447 billion second stimulus package. Yet, even with a Democrat Congress in 2009 and 2010, President Obama couldn’t get these tax increases passed. Why? Because even Democrats were opposed to raising these taxes. It seems that opposing Obama’s tax increases might truly be a bipartisan issue. These facts weren’t lost in the morning papers…... Continue Reading »

Yet President Obama and Congressional Democrats still don’t get it - ending Washington’s addiction to spending is vital for economic certainty and creating jobs. It is truly remarkable that this President and his allies in Congress continue to stand in the way of even the most modest Republican spending reductions at a time when the country is borrowing nearly 40 cents of every dollar that it spends. Today’s achievement was the first step in what will be a long discussion on how to get our fiscal house in order and set a course for long-term job growth. Republicans are committed to solving our nation’s debt crisis and challenging President Obama’s unsustainable status quo.”... Continue Reading »

In Case You Missed It: “Paul Ryan’s Revolution Would Finish Reagan’s”

- April 5, 2011

“Is Rep. Paul Ryan’s “Path to Prosperity” potentially the most important and necessary piece of economic legislation since President Ronald Reagan’s tax cuts in 1981? Quite likely. The blueprint embraces free markets and individual choice to radically reshape America’s social welfare state for the 21st century and shrink government. Instead of looking for ways to finance an ever-expanding public sector, it would prevent Washington from growing to a projected 45 percent of GDP by 2050 (vs. 24 percent today) and instead reduce it to just under 15 percent by that year. Ryan would downsize government to its smallest size since 1950 and prevent the Europeanization of the American economy. The Ryan Path embraces dynamic growth, not managed decline and stagnation....
