Karen Mallard, call your office. And maybe a lawyer.

Garren Shipley - March 9, 2018

“Under investigation by the ATF” is not a good way to start a campaign, as Karen Mallard can now tell you.

"The Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is investigating congressional candidate Karen Mallard after she posted a video on Facebook that shows her cutting apart an AR-15 rifle."

Modifying a rifle to have a barrel less than 16 inches is illegal, unless the person doing so jumps through a number of hoops under the National Firearms Act. ATF approval is required and $200 tax must be paid beforehand.

"'News 3 reached out to local attorney Eric Leckie and showed him the video. He said, 'Sawing off the end of a rifle barrel would probably not destroy it. But if it shortened the barrel to under 16 inches, sawing off the end would make it immediately illegal and it`s a very bad idea," said Leckie.’"

Mallard isn’t claiming ignorance, either. "I knew exactly what I was doing,” she told WTKR.

As you cover Karen Mallard’s campaign launch failure, please consider the following quote from me:

“If you want to run on changing our nation’s gun laws, it might be a good idea to know the laws already in place.”  — Garren Shipley, RNC spokesman
