MEMO: Gender Pay Gap in the White House

RE: Gender Pay Gap in the White House

In last night’s State of the Union address, President Obama called for legislation to ensure women are paid the same as men, and today Lilly Ledbetter will be on Capitol Hill discussing the same issue.
It’s interesting, though, that for all his talk, President Obama allows his White House to pay women less than men.  Last night, President Obama told Congress, “Women deserve equal pay for equal work,” and then he headed back to the White House where women don’t receive equal pay.
On the issue of wages, the president said, “I intend to lead by example.” Women in the White House are right to ask, “When?”
As a woman, I’m offended at this hypocrisy. The president says he believes in equal pay, but he fails to live up to his words in the one place where he has the most control: his own White House.

Female Staffers In The Obama White House Earn Considerably Less Than Their Male Counterparts

A 2013 Analysis Of Payroll Data Found That “Female Staffers At The Obama White House Are Paid Less Than 87 Cents For Every Dollar Paid To Male Staffers” – A Pay Gap Of 13%.  “An analysis of White House payroll data reveals that the 228 female employees in the Obama White House are being paid a median annual salary of $65,000 this year, compared to a median annual salary of nearly $75,000 for the 231 male White House staffers (see chart above). In other words, female staffers at the Obama White House are paid less than 87 cents for every dollar paid to male staffers, and there is therefore a significant White House ‘gender pay gap’ of more than 13%.” (Mark J. Perry, “Gender Wage Gap In Obama’s White House: Female Staffers Earn Less Than 87 Cents On The Dollar Compared To Men,” American Enterprise Institute, 12/8/13)

According To A 2012 Analysis By PolitiFact, Women In The Obama White House “Earn 87 Percent Of What Their Male Colleagues At The White House Do.” “When we downloaded the same statistics from the White House website and ran the numbers, we came up with similar results -- $63,240 for women and $72,876 for men. So women in the White House, by our calculations, earn 87 percent of what their male colleagues at the White House do, not far off from what the Free Beacon found. (Some of the variation may be explained by differences in determining the sex of the 454 employees on the list. We were able to determine the sex of all but 18 employees.)” (Louis Jacobson, “Mitt Romney Says Women White House Employees Earn Less Than Men Under Barack Obama,”PolitiFact, 10/29/12)
