Does Mexico Joe Donnelly Still Support Border Security and Immigration Reform?

Michael Joyce - January 8, 2018

Good Afternoon-

Less than 5 years ago, all 54 Democrats in the then Democrat-controlled Senate – including Sen. Joe Donnelly –voted to:

  • double the length of a new border fence with Mexico
  • end the diversity visa lottery
  • spend $40 billion on border security
  • double the number of border agents to 40,000
  • stop family members of U.S. citizens from coming here on reunification visas
  • create “merit-based” visas

Before that, in 2006, Democrats like Chuck Schumer, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and Joe Biden voted to construct hundreds of miles of fencing along the border. (See: Boston Globe headline: “In 2006, Democrats were saying 'build that fence!'")

But terrified of upsetting their militantly-liberal base, Democrats have gone AWOL on the very policies they supported just a few years ago.

As recently as this past September, Joe Donnelly made these remarks to USA Today:

“Sen. Joe Donnelly of Indiana, one of the most endangered Democrats up for re-election in 2018, offered the most nuanced answer about funding the wall. “We need a border security strategy that includes the infrastructure, technology, equipment, and personnel necessary to secure our borders,” Donnelly said. “We also need to require employers to use the E-Verify system to ensure that they hire only legal workers. I supported each of these concepts in the Senate-passed comprehensive, bipartisan immigration reform several years ago.”

Don’t let Democrats like Joe Donnelly forget their long and recent history of supporting many of the same measures President Trump is championing today.
