More False Reporting

Mike Reed - June 13, 2017

With Attorney General Sessions denying the existence of a supposed 3rd meeting with the Russian Ambassador in 2016, that makes three false media narratives which have been debunked in the course of the past week.

Widespread falsehoods spread by the media are becoming a far too common occurrence.  Often, these inaccurate stories are left online without even a correction or explanation, and everyone in the D.C. media establishment just moves on with their lives.  They deserve to be called out.

See below for just three examples of major media stories/narratives that spread like wildfire over the past few months and were proven to be incorrect in just the past week….

  1. In late March, CNN reported on the possibility of a “3rd meeting” between AG Sessions and the Russian Ambassador.  This rumor has been reported on multiple times over the past several months despite repeated Department of Justice denials.

Today, AG Sessions categorically denied that meeting took place.

  1. Last week, Former FBI Director Comey admitted that he told President Trump he wasn’t under investigation three different occasions.

This revelation followed a month of media reports mocking President Trump for making this exact claim, and writing that he must be wrong.

  • CNN’s Chris Cillizza cast doubt on Trump’s claim at the time, writing it should be taken with “an appropriate level of skepticism.”
  1. Comey said last week that a major New York Times article in February about alleged contacts between Trump campaign advisers and Russian officials was “not true.”

In His Testimony, Director Comey Described An Article In The New York Times From February About Supposed Contacts Between President Trump’s Advisers And Russian Intelligence Officials As “In The Main, It Was Not True.” “James B. Comey, the former F.B.I. director, on Thursday disputed an article that appeared in February in The New York Times about contacts between President Trump’s advisers and Russian intelligence officials. Answering a question about the Times article during an appearance before the Senate Intelligence Committee, Mr. Comey said that ‘in the main, it was not true.’” (Michael S. Schmidt, Mark Mazzetti and Matt Apuzzo, “Comey Disputes New York Times Article About Russia Investigation,” The New York Times, 6/8/17)

  • The Article Comey Disputed Was The First News Article That Revealed Direct Contacts Between Trump Advisers And Russian Officials Before The Election. “The article was the first to reveal direct contacts between Trump advisers and Russian officials before the election – contacts that are now at the heart of F.B.I. and congressional investigations.” (Michael S. Schmidt, Mark Mazzetti and Matt Apuzzo, “Comey Disputes New York Times Article About Russia Investigation,” The New York Times, 6/8/17)

Director Comey Told The United States Senate Committee On Intelligence That “There Have Been Many, Many Stories Purportedly Based On Classified Information About – Well, About Lots Of Stuff, But Especially About Russia, That Are Just Dead Wrong.” SENATOR JIM LANKFORD (R-OK): “Ok. Ok. You had mentioned before about some news stories and news accounts, but, without having to go into all the names and the specific times and to be able to dip into all that, have there been news accounts about the Russia investigation, about collusion, about this whole event or accusations that, as you read the story, you were stunned about how wrong they got the facts?” COMEY: “Yes. There have been many, many stories purportedly based on classified information about – well, about lots of stuff, but especially about Russia, that are just dead wrong.” (Select Committee On Intelligence, U.S. Senate, Hearing, 6/8/17)
