Obamacare has failed to make Americans better off

RNC Communications - July 12, 2012

Obamacare Repeal Supported by Republicans and Democrats

Today the U.S. House of Representatives will take the first step in the repeal of the Obama health care plan. In a measure which will continue to show the commitment of House Republicans to display sound fiscal responsibility and repeal a health care law fraught with reckless tax increases, the House will vote on repeal. This vote will be interesting because unlike the passage which took place on a strictly party line vote, a number of Democrats will join their Republican colleagues in voting to repeal Obamacare.

OBAMACARE HAS FAILED TO MAKE AMERICANS BETTER OFF

One of the many promises made by the President during the health care debate was that American’s health care would be more “affordable and available”. According to Factcheck.org, “Obamacare is making health care less affordable, with an increase of 1%-3% in health insurance premiums for employer-sponsored family plans...which casts doubt on the President’s claim that it would lower premiums by up to $2,500 for a typical family per year.”

THE PRESIDENT PROMISED AMERICANS THEY COULD KEEP THEIR PHYSICIAN AND CURRENT COVERAGE IF THEY WERE HAPPY...WRONG!

In what is already a long list of half-truths, misstatements and untruths, one of the biggest was the promise by the President that if, “If you like your health care plan, you can keep your health care plan.” According to Politico, it turns out that, for a lot of people, that isn’t true. In fact based upon the work of the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) “...it appears nearly 20 million Americans could lose their employer-provided health care plan because of President Obama’s health care reform law.”

THE COST OF OBAMACARE ON THE SHOULDERS OF THE MIDDLE CLASS

As we all now know, the increase in taxes and fees because of Obamacare will be unfairly shouldered by small business owners, but what is now quite clear according to the Wall Street Journal, “Obama has imposed the largest tax increase in history on the middle class.” The numbers don’t lie. According to the CBO projection, 76% of those who pay the individual mandate make less than 500% of the poverty level, estimated to be $24,000 for a family of four over the next four years. That means 76% of the payers will earn less than $120,000 a year.”

This legislation which the President has promised is here to stay must go. With the vote of the House of Representatives today, it will be clear who is willing to stand up for the middle class, small business owners and the majority of Americans who seek repeal of Obamacare. This legislation was flawed and ill-conceived from the beginning and it is time to repeal.
