ObamaCare Not Living Up To Sen. Jeff Merkley’s Promises For One Oregon Mom

- January 2, 2014

An Oregon Mother Reports She Is Unable To Afford Health Insurance Under ObamaCare. “Then there are people like a 33-year-old married mother of an 18-month-old. The woman, who asked to remain anonymous, is a freelance yoga instructor whose husband works for a local non-profit that pays for his health insurance.  But to add her or their son onto the plan would cost more than the couple can afford.  So she turned to Cover Oregon. She has been without health insurance since she was 21. But as a mother, she needs it.” (Jessica Morkert, “Mom Caught In Health Insurance Loophole,” KOIN, 1/2/14)

Due To A Loophole In ObamaCare, The Oregon Mother Does Not Qualify For Subsidized Coverage.  “Even though her and her husband's combined income should qualify her for a subsidized health care plan, she's been told she does not qualify, and the private plan options are still too expensive.  ‘It wasn't until I started the process and got an agent that I started hearing from them I wasn't going to qualify for subsidies because I qualify on my husband's insurance,’ she said.” (Jessica Morkert, “Mom Caught In Health Insurance Loophole,” KOIN, 1/2/14)

SEN. JEFF MERKLEY (D-OR) PROMISED OBAMACARE WOULD “PROVIDE AFFORDABLE, ACCESSIBLE HEALTH CARE FOR ALL AMERICANS”

As The Senate Debated ObamaCare In December Of 2009, Sen. Jeff Merkley Said That ObamaCare Would “Provide Affordable, Accessible Health Care For All Americans.” “‘The bill before us is far from a perfect bill, but it is a good piece of legislation that will finally provide affordable, accessible health care for all Americans,’ said Merkley. ‘Importantly, it will allow small businesses and the uninsured to band together to buy more affordable coverage while putting in a health care bill of rights that ends insurance companies' worst practices. For generations, we have tried to fulfill the promise that no American should go without needed care; we are now on the doorstep of making that happen.’” (Press Release, “Merkley: Senate On The Doorstep Of Fulfilling Promise On Health Care For All,” Sen. Jeff Merkley, 12/22/09)

  • Merkley Specifically Touted “Financial Assistance So Everyone Can Afford Insurance.” “Financial Assistance so Everyone Can Afford Insurance:  The bill will provide a sliding scale of tax credits to Americans to help them purchase coverage.  The assistance phases out at 400% of the poverty level or approximately $88,200 for a family of four.” (Press Release, “Merkley: Senate On The Doorstep Of Fulfilling Promise On Health Care For All,” Sen. Jeff Merkley, 12/22/09)

Oregonians Who Don’t Qualify For Subsidies Have Seen Their Insurance Costs Go Up Under ObamaCare

According To CoverOregon, A 30-Year-Old Portland Resident Will Pay $147.00 Per Month For The Lowest Cost Bronze Plan Under ObamaCare – An Increase Of 283 Percent Over The Rates Previously Available. (coveroregon.com; John E. Dickson, Director Of Health Care For The Government Accountability Office, Letter To Honorable Orrin G. Hatch, 7/23/13)
