RE: Our Veterans Deserve Better
Following the Memorial Day weekend, our thoughts are with our veterans and their families. Those who fight for our freedom deserve the unwavering support of their fellow citizens. And they deserve a VA system that works.
Under President Obama, veterans have not received the care they need and deserve at VA healthcare facilities. Five years ago, President Obama said there was a problem at the VA and that he would fix it. But reports in recent months show that he failed to act and that the problems were far worse than many imagined.
It’s clear that we are not talking about one or two isolated incidents. It is a systemic problem. Not only have veterans died waiting for care, but VA administrators across the country have been covering up their failures and their secret waiting lists.
It’s unacceptable, and so is the slow reaction from the Obama administration. The president’s spokespeople say he’s “mad as hell,” but his actions say something else. His weak response makes it seem like he doesn’t grasp the seriousness of the problem. Asking a Deputy Chief of Staff to investigate doesn’t inspire confidence.
Appointing a White House insider is just business as usual; it’s exactly what this president does when he wants something swept under the rug. Veterans have died. Nothing less than a full-scale independent investigation is acceptable.
This is why the RNC will continue to demand accountability from the Obama administration, and we think Democrats should join in that effort. This shouldn’t be a partisan issue.
In the coming days and weeks—however long it takes—we will continue to ask for accountability and call for an independent investigation.
Our veterans deserve more than talking points, and we want them to get the care and the answers they need. Those who risk their lives on the front lines of the battlefield should not lose their lives waiting in line at the VA.
