President Trump took action to fulfill his promise to end taxpayer-funded abortion by introducing the Protect Life Rule, which clarifies that Title X "family planning" funds can no longer go toward abortions.
Before this rule, Title X grantees have been allowed to carry out abortions on the same premises funded by taxpayers and keep taxpayer funding. Planned Parenthood has received $50 million -$60 million in Title X funds annually even though more than half of its sites provide abortion. Thanks to President Trump, that changes now.
Existing Title X funds will instead be redirected from establishments like Planned Parenthood to Title X centers that do not promote or perform abortions, and will be invested in a growing number of community and rural health centers.
More than 85 pro-life groups signed on to letters in support of this rule, working with President Trump for months to see it through. The rule also has the support of 41 senators and 153 representatives who previously sent letters to HHS asking for the same revision to Title X funds.
This latest "promise made, promise kept" by the Trump administration restores the spirit of our law and makes great strides in improving women's health centers across the country. This is a huge victory for women, pro-lifers, and the American people, who are finally one step closer to being completely out of the abortion business.
President Trump celebrated this victory with pro-life advocates at the Campaign For Life Gala on May 22, where he was the keynote speaker.
