After accepting $20 million from environmental groups – and being promised up to $100 million for 2014 elections by California billionaire Tom Steyer – last night and early this morning Senate Democrats held a “talk-a-thon” about their pet project of cap-and-trade.
If you’re reporting on this news then below is a statement and research from the Republican National Committee (RNC):
“If you thought living in the Ritz-Carlton was expensive, it’s peanuts compared to the $100 million contribution from California billionaire Tom Steyer which is the going rate to rent Harry Reid’s Senate. Last night’s talk-a-thon was nothing more than payback for Steyer’s donations to the Democrat Party. Either Mr. Reid or the Democrat Party needs to reimburse taxpayers for their campaign stunt.” Jahan Wilcox, RNC Spokesman
AFTER ACCEPTING $20 MILLION FROM ENVIRONMENTAL GROUPS, REID & SENATE DEMOCRATS BROUGHT THE 2014 CAMPAIGN TO THE U.S. SENATE
Last Night Democrats Held A Meaningless Talk-A-Thon About Cap-And-Trade. “You could look at it as a filibuster without the bill. After the last round of votes concludes Monday night, 28 senators plan to talk the night away in series of speeches delivered on the chamber floor, focused on climate change. Although some call it a political stunt, the senators insist the event -- organized by the Climate Action Task Force -- will raise public awareness about global warming and how to stem it.” (Senators plan all-nighter to spotlight climate change, The Los Angeles Times, 03/10/14)
Environmental Groups Have Spent About $20 Million Electing Democrats And Contributed Approximately $742,000 To Candidates In The 2012 Cycle. “There is another more political reason for the decision by Senate Democrats to devote their time to the issue right now. And that issue is campaign cash. Environmental groups spent about $20 million on ads and other activities to help Democrats in 2012 and gave about $742,000 directly to candidates during the cycle... Then there's the billionaire businessman Thomas Steyer. ...Steyer hosted a recent fundraiser at his San Francisco home that netted the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee $400,000 and where Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) and the six other Democratic senators in attendance openly discussed plans for tonight's talkathon, according to reports." (Ed O’Keefe, What The Senate’s All-Nighter On Climate Change Is Really About, The Washington Post, 03/10/14)
Steyer Is Promising To Spend Up To $100 Million On The 2014 Elections. “A billionaire retired investor is forging plans to spend as much as $100 million during the 2014 election, seeking to pressure federal and state officials to enact climate change measures through a hard-edge campaign of attack ads against governors and lawmakers. The donor, Tom Steyer, a Democrat who founded one of the world’s most successful hedge funds, burst onto the national political scene during last year’s elections, when he spent $11 million to help elect Terry McAuliffe governor of Virginia and millions more intervening in a Democratic congressional primary in Massachusetts. Now he is rallying other deep-pocketed donors, seeking to build a war chest that would make his political organization, NextGen Climate Action, among the largest outside groups in the country, similar in scale to the conservative political network overseen by Charles and David Koch.” (Nicholas Confessore, “Financier Plans Big Ad Campaign On Climate Change,” The New York Times, 2/17/14
