RNC Chairman Reince Priebus and Co-Chairman Sharon Day to attend dedication of Frederick Douglass statue

- June 19, 2013

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today RNC Chairman Reince Priebus and RNC Co-Chairman Sharon Day will attend the dedication of the Frederick Douglass statue, a gift from the District of Columbia, in Emancipation Hall at the U.S. Capitol.

“America owes a great deal to Frederick Douglass and his fight for freedom, equality, and justice,” said Chairman Priebus. “It’s an honor to attend this unveiling as we pay tribute to one of Washington, D.C.’s most famous residents.

“An advocate for abolition, equal rights, and women’s suffrage, Douglass’s journey from slave to statesman is a testament to the strength of his own personal will and convictions. A Republican himself, Douglass advised America’s first Republican president, Abraham Lincoln, as he worked to end slavery and heal the union.

“His story was an inspiration then as it is today. His statue will now stand in the Capitol and offer future generations a chance to honor and remember his legacy.”

“I’m excited to join with students and educators, national and local leaders of both parties, and descendents of Frederick Douglass for this historic ceremony,” said Co-Chairman Day.

“This great abolitionist and inspirational orator and writer deserves to be honored in the halls of our nation’s capitol. I hope today will be a chance for all Americans to remember the incredible life he led and to honor the values of freedom and equal opportunity for which he advocated.”

Those who wish to watch the ceremony live can do so at 11 AM ET at www.speaker.gov/frederickdouglass
