RNC Statement Celebrating Black History Month

- February 1, 2013

WASHINGTON – Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Reince Priebus and Co-Chairman Sharon Day released the following statement celebrating Black History Month:

“Today we mark the beginning of Black History Month, a time to recognize the tremendous influence of African Americans in our culture, our politics, and our economy,” said Chairman Priebus. “We celebrate the artists and inventors, politicians and leaders who have shaped not only the African American community but the entire nation.

“I am especially mindful of the impact of African Americans on the Republican Party--from grassroots activists to Congressmen, Senators, and Secretaries of State. From the very beginning of the party, our history has been intertwined with the history of the African American community. It was in 1854 in my home state of Wisconsin that the Republican Party was formed to fight for the abolitionist cause. Today, the party continues to stand proudly on the principles of individual freedom and equal opportunity for all, but as I said at our party’s recent meeting in Charlotte, Republicans must do a better job of sharing that message with all Americans and every community.”

“Over the years, African Americans have strengthened our party. But we also recognize that today far too many in the African American community haven’t heard from us about how the Republican Party’s ideals are right for their families” said Co-Chair Day. “In the coming months and years, we’re going to change that perception and make sure every American hears and understands our principles--our dedication to expanding real opportunity in the job market, in education, and in health care.

“As we honor black history this month, we also rededicate ourselves as a party to building better relationships in all communities--today and in the future.”
