WASHINGTON – Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus, RNC Co-Chair Sharon Day, and Republican Kansas State Representative Dr. Shanti Gandhi released the following statement honoring the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi on the Indian holiday known as Gandhi Jayanti.
"Today we join with the people of India and our Indian American friends in celebrating the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, who dedicated his life to protesting discrimination and championing self governance," said Chairman Priebus. "His leadership has been an inspiration to those fighting for freedom—in America and around the world."
"Mahatma Gandhi was a civil rights leader who stood, above all, for peace," said Co-chair Day. "His belief in the power of non-violent protests had a profound impact not just in India but around the world."
"My great-grandfather was respected because he lived what he preached and stood firmly for what he truly believed in," said Dr. Shanti Gandhi. "Passion for truth, or Satyagraha, was his weapon of choice to peacefully battle injustice. On Gandhi Jayanti, let us try to emulate his approach in how we live our lives."
