RNC Statement on the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington

- August 28, 2013

WASHINGTON – Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus and Co-Chairman Sharon Day released the following statement commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom:

“Fifty years ago today, hundreds of thousands of Americans rallied for the cause of justice and equality,” said Chairman Priebus. “Dr. King stood on the Lincoln Memorial and called us to remember the basic promise of America’s founding: that God created us all equal, and all of us deserve an equal chance at making it in this great country.

“Marchers came to Washington to claim their right to the American Dream, and we can’t rest until that dream is in reach for every American. An anniversary like this isn’t just a call to remembrance; it’s a call to action. And we should continue to draw inspiration from the words that echoed across the National Mall and around the country in 1963.

“May God bless the legacy of the March on Washington—and may God guide us in the continued pursuit of what is just and right.”

“Today we commemorate a moment in history best remembered by those four powerful words: ‘I have a dream,’” said Co-Chairman Day. “We honor the hundreds of thousands of Americans who came from all across the country to take a stand and raise their voices. We remember, too, all who have fought for the cause of civil rights—especially those who endured violence and those who were killed. America is a better place today because of their vision and bravery.

“We celebrate the progress that has been made, and we look to the future—as we continue the work of building a nation where opportunity and freedom are offered in abundance to each and every American.”

On Monday, the RNC held a luncheon to commemorate the March. Highlights of the event can be seen here.

Chairman Priebus’ op-ed, “The Future of the Dream,” based on his remarks at the event can be read here.
