The Democrats' filibuster hypocrisy

Tommy Pigott - March 26, 2021

“If the majority chooses to end the filibuster, if they choose to change the rules and put an end to democratic debate, then the fighting and the bitterness and the gridlock will only get worse.”

“[Ending the filibuster] is not only a bad idea, it upsets the constitutional design and it disservices the country.”

Nope, those aren’t Republicans, those are then-Senators Barack Obama and Joe Biden in 2005, both arguing against getting rid of the filibuster.

That’s what makes the Democrats’ current claims about the filibuster so plainly hypocritical – when they are not in the majority, they support the filibuster, when they have the majority, they argue for throwing bipartisanship and unity to the wind in favor of a far-left agenda.

And what’s worse, their current arguments for ending the filibuster are complete nonsense. There have been ZERO filibusters this congress. That’s right ZERO.

So when Biden was discussing how much the filibuster is being “abused” yesterday, he actually highlighted how much Democrats used it “last year.”  A prominent example: Democrats used the filibuster to block police reform. In fact, when they were in the minority last year, Democrats used the filibuster 327 times.
