The only Indiana Senate rating that listed the race as “Leans Democrat” has just switched to a toss-up. Howey Politics Indiana noted the angst for Donnelly from a recent Morning Consult poll that just came out, stating “But the real heartburn for Democrats is that 44% said it’s “time for a new person” while 31% said Donnelly ‘deserves reelection.’”
As for Mike Braun, Howey said “He has avoided all the blunders that Richard Mourdock committed in 2012 when he alienated the Lugar wing of the party, as well as the incendiary rhetoric that prompted the National Republican Senatorial Committee to assign handlers and keep him out of joint appearances. Braun has financial resources. He’s already running his first statewide TV ad for the general featuring his business and employees as an inoculation against Democratic attacks that have already been unleashed. The Mike Braun we saw in Evansville was on message. […] This election will be a referendum on President Trump, the economy, and how both the North Korean talks and Trump tariffs fare.”
Considering that the economy is booming with a boost from the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and the President’s approval rating in Indiana remains high in a state he carried by 19 points in 2016, all signs point to Indiana electing a new Senator come November.
“As of today, Sleepin’ Joe Donnelly can no longer point to a poll or rating that gives him the advantage in the Indiana Senate race. The fact of the matter is that Hoosiers have seen enough from Donnelly and they’re ready to replace him with an outsider and businessman in Mike Braun.” –RNC Spokesperson Michael Joyce
