The New Hampshire Union Leader has a message for Senators Maggie Hassan and Jeanne Shaheen: stop the partisan games and confirm Gina Haspel as CIA Director. In a time where America is facing some of the severest threats to date, we need an experienced CIA director in place to protect our country.
Confirming CIA Directors should be a non-partisan affair. In fact, Haspel is supported by eight former CIA Directors appointed by both Republicans and Democrats. At Haspel’s confirmation hearing, she received glowing introductions from the unlikely bipartisan duo of Senate Intel fame: former Republican Senator Saxby Chambliss and former Democrat Senator Evan Bayh.
Haspel’s credentials are impeccable and include 33 years of service to the CIA in some of the most dangerous parts in the world. The people of New Hampshire deserve the security of a well-qualified CIA Director. Hassan and Shaheen must do the right thing by putting party politics aside in order to protect American national security.
Confirm Haspel: The intelligent choice for CIA
New Hampshire Union Leader
May 10, 2018
The use of enhanced interrogation techniques is a legitimate public policy question, though not the most pressing one facing America’s intelligence community. Yet it has dominated the confirmation battle of Gina Haspel, President Trump’s nominee to head the Central Intelligence Agency.
Haspel says she would not restart an interrogation program.
Much of Haspel’s 33-year career remains classified, but she has received stellar endorsements from across the intelligence community. She is capable, experienced, and dedicated to keeping America safe. She should not be disqualified for doing her job using rules some senators now find objectionable.
But Haspel’s nomination signalled a continuing thaw in his Cold War with the CIA, started by the steady leadership of former CIA Director Mike Pompeo.
New Hampshire Sens. Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan put politics ahead of national security in opposing Pompeo’s nomination for secretary of state.
We urge them to reset those priorities, and support Haspel as Pompeo’s worthy successor. We need Haspel serving as America’s eyes and ears in a hostile world.
