Will Tom Perez Continue To Attack Bernie Sanders If He Wins DNC Chair?

- February 24, 2017

BOTH TOM PEREZ AND THE DNC WORKED TO UNDERMINE BERNIE SANDERS AND HIS SUPPORTERS IN THE 2016 PRIMARY, IF PEREZ WINS DNC CHAIR, WILL THEY JOIN EFFORTS AND CONTINUE TO DO SO?

Perez Told Clinton Campaign Staff That They Should Use Racial Identity As A Wedge Issue In The Democrat Primary And "Put A Fork Once And For All In The False Narrative About Bernie And Latinos"

Perez Stated That Because Clinton's "Plan To Attract All Minority Voters" Worked In Nevada, They Could Use That To Change The Current Narrative That Bernie Does Great With Young Voters. "Emmy and the team have a good plan to attract all minority voters. When we do well there, then the narrative changes from Bernie kicks ass among young voters to Bernie does well only among young white liberals-- that is a different story and a perfect lead in to South Carolina, where once again, we can work to attract young voters of color." (Tom Perez Email To John Podesta, "Observations From The Road," John Podesta Wikileaks , 2/5/16)

Tom Perez Believed The Narrative Would Change "From Bernie Kicks Ass Among Young Voters To Bernie Does Well Only Among Young White Liberals." "When we do well there, then the narrative changes from Bernie kicks ass among young voters to Bernie does well only among young white liberals-- that is a different story and a perfect lead in to South Carolina, where once again, we can work to attract young voters of color." (Tom Perez Email To John Podesta, "Observations From The Road," John Podesta Wikileaks , 2/5/16)

  • Perez Stated That This Narrative Would Be "A Perfect Lead In To South Carolina, Where Once Again, We Can Work To Attract Young Voters Of Color." "Emmy and the team have a good plan to attract all minority voters.

On March 2, 2016, Perez Emailed John Podesta Telling Him That He Would "Trumpet Her Strong Support Among Latinos" On Television And That He Would "Put A Fork Once And For All In The False Narrative About Bernie And Latinos." "I also look forward to my appearance on Telemundo tomorrow where I can trumpet her strong support among Latinos and put a fork once and for all in the false narrative about Bernie and Latinos." (Tom Perez Email To John Podesta, "Re: Congrats," John Podesta Wikileaks , 3/2/16)

To Help Clinton, Perez Characterized Sanders' Plans As Unrealistic And Dismissed His Policy Positions As Causing "Suffering" Because They Were Not Enacted

Tom Perez Cast Bernie Sanders As A "Dreamer" And Said The People Want Results, Not Revolutions. "'I appreciate the idealistic vision that Sen. Sanders articulates, but we are a nation of dreamers and doers and the folks I talk to who want to adjust their status - they don't want revolutions. They want results.'" (Maxwell Tani, "One Of Hillary Clinton's Potential Vice-Presidential Picks Just Went After Bernie Sanders," Business Insider , 4/14/17)

Perez Emailed Clinton Campaign Staff Telling Them That As A Clinton Surrogate, He Made Sure To Emphasize That "People Don't Have The Time To Wait For Senator Sanders" To Find A Healthcare System He Liked. "In my HRC advocacy, I now say how these people don't have the time to wait for Senator Sanders to complete his quest for the perfect health care system, or the perfect immigration reform bill; it gets a lot of good nods, especially when I talk about Kennedy McCain immigration and how Bernie opposed this, and immigrants are still suffering the consequences of inaction." (Tom Perez Email To John Podesta, "Observations From The Road," John Podesta Wikileaks , 2/5/16)

  • Perez Also Noted That Because Of An Immigration Bill That Didn't Pass, Which Sanders Opposed, Immigrants Are "Still Suffering The Consequences Of Inaction." "In my HRC advocacy, I now say how these people don't have the time to wait for Senator Sanders to complete his quest for the perfect health care system, or the perfect immigration reform bill; it gets a lot of good nods, especially when I talk about Kennedy McCain immigration and how Bernie opposed this, and immigrants are still suffering the consequences of inaction." (Tom Perez Email To John Podesta, "Observations From The Road," John Podesta Wikileaks , 2/5/16)

Perez Actively Undermined Sanders' Campaign Narrative That He Was The Only Choice For Progressives Voting Against The "Establishment"

Tom Perez Stated "The Notion That You're Either For Bernie Of You're For The Establishment" Is "Inaccurate, To Be Charitable." "'I must confess, as a proud progressive who has the scars to show for it-someone who was the subject of roughly 20 Wall Street Journal op-eds against him for my nomination-the notion that you're either for Bernie or you're for the establishment, I find that inaccurate, to be charitable,' he said. 'Frankly a disservice to people like Dolores Huerta, people like Luis Gutierrez, people like Sherrod Brown. And frankly, President Obama.'" (Patrick Caldwell, "This Obama Official Is Going To Bat For Hillary In Nevada," Mother Jones , 2/18/16)
