Keith Ellison is one of the most anti-law enforcement attorney generals in history. Minnesotans are paying close attention to the fact that he broke from fellow Democrats, who fear their 2022 prospects could be in jeopardy ( see Angie Craig and Tim Walz) should they support a ballot measure to dismantle the Minneapolis Police Department.
Ellison, who called the city charter’s enforcement of officer hires based on the city’s population an “ outdated model for law enforcement and safety,” has a history of anti-police rhetoric spanning decades.
During the 2018 election, Republicans were quick to remind folks of Ellison’s past. Ellison is a supporter of one of the FBI’s most wanted terrorists, Joanne Chesimard, aka Assata Shakur. During a private event, Ellison referred to Shakur, who was serving a life sentence for murdering a New Jersey State Trooper in the 70s before fleeing to Cuba, as “good decent people” while calling on the Castro regime to rebuff any extradition charges, according to CNN. For folks keeping track at home, we know Ellison’s support of cop killers doesn’t end there.
While we could talk about Ellison’s appearance at a fundraiser for Symbionese Liberation Army member Sarah Jane Olson, who attempted to blow up two police cars, we could also look to Ellison organizing events against the Minneapolis Police Department with Vice Lord gang leader Sharif Willis, who was being investigated in the execution-style death of MPD officer Jerry Haaf in 1992.
Considering Ellison’s blatant support of cop killers, why should anyone be surprised that Minnesota’s top law enforcement officer cares nothing for those who enforce our laws?
