WASHINGTON — On Friday, February 21, the Republican National Committee (RNC) announced the 2025 recipients of its Black Republican Trailblazer Awards.
The Trailblazer Awards are presented to distinguished Americans who display extraordinary leadership and dedication to both the Black and Republican communities. This year’s recipients are notable Black Republicans who are helping President Donald J. Trump and Republicans in their mission to Make America Great Again, committing their time and effort to growing the Republican Party, and helping advance conservative values and legislation. The Trailblazer Award is a special tribute to members of the Black Republican Community for their sacrifices and hard work.
In 2025, the RNC is thrilled to present three awards: The Trailblazer, Emerging Leader, and Legacy Awards.
- The RNC Trailblazer Award is presented to someone who displays an exceptional leadership background in the Republican Party. Whether it be working to advance conservative legislation, helping to get Republicans elected, or committing themselves to growing the Republican Party, Trailblazers have a track record of getting things done.
- The RNC Emerging Leader Award is presented to individuals who have successfully promoted Republican Party principles as a leader in their organization, community, or state. This includes running for office, running Republican campaigns or organizations, or fighting to advance conservative values.
- The RNC Legacy Award is presented to individuals who demonstrate a significant and long-term impact on Republican Party principles locally, statewide, or nationally. They demonstrate a long-term commitment to the Republican Party and have a positive impact on their community, state, or the nation.
The 2025 recipients of the Trailblazer Awards are:
- Trailblazer: The Honorable Byron Donalds, U.S. Congressman - Congressman Donalds has been a rising leader among Republicans in Congress. Donalds has been an advocate for America First policies and a champion for Black Americans. Donalds chaired the Insurance and Banking Subcommittee in addition to his focus on elder affairs, criminal justice reform, and education. Donalds has a distinguished record in Congress and continues to be a strong fighter for the truth, combating the far-left's attempts to divide America.
- Emerging Leader: Diante Johnson, President of the Black Conservative Federation - Johnson is the Founder and president of the Black Conservative Federation. Under Johnson's leadership, BCF has evolved from a networking group for Black Republicans to championing values of Black Americans through political advocacy, outreach, and community engagement. In addition to his leadership at BCF, Johnson has worked to elect Republicans at the local, regional, and national level for President Trump.
- Legacy: Clarence Henderson, civil rights hero and community activist - Henderson has been a community activist fighting for freedom and equality for decades, with deep roots in the civil rights movement. In 1960, Henderson participated in the Woolworth Lunch Counter Sit-In at North Carolina A&T State University, and has been fighting for freedom, faith, and conservative values ever since.

The RNC Trailblazer Award is one way we recognize the contributions and impact of leaders who have helped Republicans make historic inroads in the Black community and are helping the Trump Administration Make America Great Again," said Chairman Michael Whatley. "I know that with the help of leaders like Byron Donalds, Diante Johnson, and Clarence Henderson, our successful efforts to share Republican values and expand our big tent Party will only continue. The RNC looks forward to continuing the momentum built in 2024 and ensuring Americans in minority communities see what it looks like to elect a Party that will work for all Americans."
Prior recipients of the Trailblazer Award include former HUD Secretary Dr. Ben Carson, South Carolina Senator Tim Scott, former Secretary of the Commonwealth of Virginia Kay Coles James, and current Texas State Representative Katrina Pierson.
Award winners are attending the Black Conservative Federation’s annual BCF Honors Luncheon as the RNC's guests today, February 21. The celebration is in addition to the recipients taking part in the White House’s National Black History Month Reception yesterday, February 20.
