WASHINGTON – Today, Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Michael Whatley released the following statement on the April jobs report:
“To no one’s surprise, April’s job report is another month of terrible results for “Bidenomics”—from the smallest job gain since October to the highest unemployment rate in two years, Joe Biden’s weak policies continue to fail hard working Americans and are a major reason why President Trump is leading in both national and battleground states polling.”
Background:
- The economy added just 175,000 jobs in April, well below economists' expectations, and the unemployment rate increased to 3.9 percent.
- The labor force participation rate remained at 62.7 percent in April, well below pre-pandemic levels.
- Permanent job losses and temporary layoffs both rose in April.
- The number of Americans working part-time for economic reasons increased by 161,000 in April, and the number of long-term unemployed Americans increased for the second month in a row.
- The number of unemployed Americans increased in April to 6.492 million, and there are 777,000 more unemployed Americans than a year ago.
- In addition to the overall unemployment rate increasing, the unemployment rate rose for Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans, Veterans, and those without a high school diploma.
