WASHINGTON -- Supported by the RNC, the Dane County Republican Party and Milwaukee County Republican Party filed two complaints with the Wisconsin Elections Commission against officials in Madison and Milwaukee. The complaints regard election officials failing to hire a sufficient number of Republican election inspectors, otherwise known as poll workers, as required by law.
RNC Chairman Michael Whatley released the following statement.
“Wisconsin election officials defied state law by refusing to hire a fair number of Republican election inspectors, despite having hundreds of Republican nominees available. This is the kind of misconduct that drives down faith in elections. The Republican Party is filing these complaints to compel election officials to follow the law and guarantee bipartisan access to important election administration positions in the Badger State.”
Background:
- Election officials in Milwaukee, Wisconsin only scheduled 49 Republican election inspectors for the primary held on April 2nd, 2024.
- The Republican Party had submitted 267 qualified names, meaning that election officials in Madison rejected roughly 4 in 5 qualified Republican nominees.
- Election officials in Madison, Wisconsin only scheduled 51 Republican election inspectors for the primary held on April 2nd, 2024.
- The Republican Party had submitted 149 qualified names, meaning that election officials in Madison rejected roughly 2 in 3 qualified Republican nominees.
- In both cities, more Democrat election inspectors were scheduled than Republican.
- Milwaukee had 215 Democrat election inspectors compared to 49 Republicans.
- Madison had 60 Democrat election inspectors compared to 51 Republicans.
- Wisconsin law requires officials to fill election inspector slots from lists submitted by each party “until the names on those lists have been depleted.” Yet both cities hired thousands of unaffiliated election inspectors before exhausting the list of Republican nominees.
- The RNC has a long history of engaging in legal action to ensure poll worker/election inspector parity in key states like Arizona, Michigan, and Nevada.
- The RNC has engaged in 82 election integrity lawsuits in 25 states so far this cycle.
