RNC and Florida GOP Intervene to Defend Florida's SAVE Act

Press Release

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Last night, the Republican National Committee (RNC) and the Republican Party of Florida (Florida GOP) filed a motion to intervene to defend Florida's SAVE Act, H.B. 991

“Democrats are once again attacking commonsense election safeguards that more than 80% of Americans support,” said RNC Chairman Joe Gruters. “The RNC is intervening to defend Florida’s proof-of-citizenship law, protect the voter rolls, and stop yet another attempt by Democrats to cheat in our elections."

Background:

  • Yesterday, the RNC and Florida GOP moved to intervene in lawsuits brought by UnidosUS, the Florida NAACP, and other left-wing groups challenging Florida's proof-of-citizenship law, H.B. 991.

  • The lawsuits seek to block Florida's requirement that people provide proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote.

  • The RNC and Florida GOP are defending this law to ensure only U.S. citizens can register to vote, keep noncitizens off the voter rolls, and protect Florida's elections.

  • The RNC is also defending Arizona's proof-of-citizenship law before the U.S. Supreme Court, which is set to hear the case next term.

  • This case is part of the RNC's nationwide effort to defend voter eligibility requirements and ensure only eligible American citizens can register to vote.
