RNC and NRCC File Lawsuit to Stop Virginia Democrats’ Illegal Attempt to Redraw Congressional Maps

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Joe Gruters and National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) Chairman Richard Hudson released the following statements after the RNC and the NRCC filed a lawsuit to block Virginia Democrats’ unconstitutional attempt to rig congressional maps:

“Virginia Democrats are trying to ram through an illegal redistricting scheme that a court has already called a blatant abuse of power,” said Chairman Gruters. “Despite nearly half of Virginians supporting President Trump, Abigail Spanberger and Democrats are working to silence voters and lock in permanent political control. They’re ignoring the state Constitution, misleading voters, and rushing a sham election. The RNC is stepping in to stop this power grab and defend Virginia voters who would be effectively disenfranchised by Democrats.”

"This is a reckless power grab designed to rush a sham process, mislead voters with deceptive ballot language, and lock in one-party control before Virginians have a fair say. The NRCC is proud to fund this legal fight and work alongside the RNC to stop the scheme and defend honest representation for every Virginian.” 

Background:

• Today, the RNC and the NRCC filed a lawsuit to stop Virginia Democrats’ unlawful redistricting process.
• A Virginia court recently ruled the underlying redistricting proposal “void from the start” and a “blatant abuse of power.”
• The Virginia Constitution requires constitutional amendments to be approved by the state legislature and submitted to voters no sooner than 90 days after final passage.
• Despite final passage of the proposed amendment on January 16, Democrats scheduled voting to begin March 6 — a clear violation of the constitution.
• The ballot language approved by Democrats falsely claims the amendment would “restore fairness,” even though the amendment would replace Virginia's nonpartisan redistricting process with a process that "unduly favor[s]" the Democratic party. 
• Democrats’ amendment also improperly combines multiple unrelated provisions, violating the Virginia Constitution’s single-subject rule.
• On the campaign trail in 2025, Abigail Spanberger falsely claimed, “I have no plans to redistrict Virginia.”
• President Trump earned 46% of the vote in Virginia in 2024, yet Democrats’ proposed map would dilute Republican representation to just 9%.
