WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Republican National Committee
(RNC) Chairman Michael Whatley released the following statement regarding
the RNC's ongoing litigation to stop noncitizens from voting in Vermont:
“The only
people who should be voting in American elections are American citizens. Full
stop. Every time the Democrats try to change this - which is often - we will
fight to defend the ballot. I’m proud the RNC is intervening to stop this
potential disaster in Vermont.”
Background
- Monday,
the RNC filed a brief with the Vermont Supreme Court in an ongoing case to
stop noncitizens from voting in certain Vermont municipal elections,
including school board elections.
- The
RNC has been fighting to stop noncitizens from voting in Vermont elections
since 2021.
- The
RNC has been aggressively fighting left-wing attempts to let noncitizens
vote in U.S. elections:
- When New York City passed a law that would allow
800,000 noncitizens to vote, the RNC led a bipartisan group of plaintiffs
who sued and won on all three of their claims that the law violated the
state constitution. New York’s highest court upheld that decision in a
landmark win protecting New Yorkers’ right to vote and
preventing noncitizens from voting.
- In
Arizona, the RNC intervened in eight cases brought by the Democrats, the
Biden DOJ, and progressive groups challenging a law that closes a legal
loophole that allowed individuals to register to vote without verifying
their citizenship.
- In
North Carolina, the RNC filed a lawsuit to compel the North Carolina
State Board of Elections to remove non-citizens from the state's voter
rolls if they said they were not a citizen on a jury duty questionnaire.
- In
Texas, the RNC intervened in cases brought by activist progressive groups
challenging Texas SB 1, a bill that focuses on enhancing election
integrity and ensures that non-citizens do not appear on voter rolls.
- In
Virginia, the RNC filed an amicus brief with the Republican Party of
Virginia in support of Virginia’s successful efforts to remove over 1,600
non-citizens from its voter rolls after the Biden Justice Department sued
the state to stop the action.
- Last
month, the RNC sent public records requests
to 48 states and Washington, D.C. seeking documents on how they maintain
their voter registration lists, including how they remove
noncitizens.
