RNC Demands Non-Citizen Voting Safeguards from Democrat States

WASHINGTON – Today, the RNC sent a letter to Democrat election officials in eight states, demanding citizenship verification and other safeguards for our elections.

RNC Chairman Michael Whatley stated: “It is illegal for non-citizens to vote in our elections. Yet time and again, we have seen Democrat officials oppose basic safeguards and dismantle election integrity provisions, intentionally opening the door to non-citizen voting in our elections. This is just the latest step in our fight to compel officials to follow the law: only Americans should decide American elections, and Democrats will be held accountable.”

Background:

  • Recently, the RNC discovered that a non-citizen in Minnesota received a primary ballot without requesting it and without registering to vote. This is a significant lapse in Minnesota’s election safeguards, and we immediately demanded answers.
  • Following this, we sent letters to Secretaries of State in California, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, Nevada, New York, and Wisconsin with our concerns and solutions to ensure only citizens vote.
  • Non-citizen voting is a real and growing threat, and it is up to state leaders to stop it. Just recently, Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose removed nearly 500 non-citizens from the rolls; Tennessee Coordinator of Elections Mark Goins sent a letter to 14,000 suspected non-citizens to update their registration and mail proof of citizenship; and Virginia’s Governor Glenn Youngkin and Attorney General Jason Miyares discovered and removed 6,300 non-citizens from the voter rolls.
  • There is no reason for Democrat officials not to follow suit. There is no place for non-citizens to influence or decide our elections, yet these states turn a blind eye, or worse, dismantle election safeguards. Democrats in Congress have opposed a commonsense fix to stop non-citizen voting, and states must enforce the law.
  • Weak systems also imperil law-abiding non-citizens, such as the individual in Minnesota who received a ballot without requesting one, who do not want to break the law and are registered or receiving ballots due to a failure in the system. Ultimately, weak systems jeopardize the integrity of our elections for all Americans.
  • The letter details how states can verify citizenship status of registered voters; encourage voters to update registration status; and remind voters of the law on non-citizen voting.
