The RNC has filed a new lawsuit in Burlington, Vermont challenging noncitizen voting. Burlington allows noncitizens to vote in local elections that have statewide effects, thus violating Vermont’s Constitution.
RNC Chairman Michael Whatley stated: “Americans should decide American elections. Democrats' persistent efforts to enable noncitizen voting dilute the voices of Americans in Vermont and across the country. This lawsuit is just the latest development in our ongoing fight to prevent noncitizens from voting in our elections."
Background:
- The lawsuit is also supported by Restoring Integrity, and Trust in Elections (RITE).
- In June 2023, Burlington became the third city in Vermont to allow noncitizen voting following a change to the Burlington city charter.
- The Vermont Constitution bars noncitizens from voting in elections on matters with statewide implications.
- Burlington’s new charter allows for noncitizen voting in school board and budget elections, which implicate the state budget and all Vermont taxpayers. This clearly violates Vermont’s Constitution.
- Noncitizens should not illegally influence our elections; this is a fundamental principle of our country. It is alarming that Democrats continue to push for noncitizen voting.
- The RNC is committed to ensuring American citizens decide our elections across the country – and 89% of Americans agree with this principle.
- This lawsuit comes on the heels of other efforts to stop noncitizens from illegally influencing our elections; we recently prevented 800,000 noncitizens from voting in New York City and won a case requiring Arizona to conduct regular citizenship checks and removal of noncitizens from the voter rolls.
