WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the Republican National Committee (RNC) intervened in a lawsuit to defend Louisiana’s effort to require proof of citizenship on federal voter registration forms.
“Louisiana has every right to require proof of citizenship to register to vote, and federal bureaucrats have no business standing in the way,” said RNC Chairman Joe Gruters. “The RNC is intervening to help Louisiana defend its law and protect the votes of American citizens. It’s simple: only Americans should vote in American elections."
Background:
Today, the RNC moved to intervene in Louisiana’s lawsuit challenging the Election Assistance Commission’s refusal to add proof-of-citizenship requirements to Louisiana's state-specific instructions on the federal voter registration form.
Louisiana law requires applicants to provide proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote.
The EAC denied Louisiana’s request, preventing the state from fully enforcing its voter registration law.
States have the authority to determine what information is necessary to verify voter eligibility.
The RNC is seeking to overturn the EAC’s decision and ensure Louisiana can implement its proof-of-citizenship requirement.
Recent revelations that thousands of noncitizens were found on New Jersey’s voter rolls underscore why proof-of-citizenship protections are needed now more than ever.
The RNC continues to support passage of the SAVE America Act to establish nationwide citizenship verification safeguards and help prevent noncitizens from registering and voting in U.S. elections.
This action builds on the RNC’s nationwide election integrity efforts to defend voter eligibility requirements and help states maintain accurate voter rolls.
