RNC Intervenes to Protect Grassroots Voter Outreach From Left-Wing Attacks

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Republican National Committee (RNC) issued the following statement after intervening last night in a lawsuit to protect grassroots canvassing.

"The left is once again trying to weaponize campaign finance laws," said RNC Chairman Joe Gruters. “Two years ago, the FEC said political parties like the RNC and our candidates can work directly with grassroots groups to knock on doors and talk to voters – exactly the kind of engagement our elections should encourage. Now, because they lost, left-wing groups are suing to silence the RNC and conservative groups from working together. We won’t allow that to happen.”

The RNC filed a motion to intervene in Campaign Legal Center v. FEC, defending a Federal Election Commission (FEC) advisory opinion that allows political parties to collaborate with other grassroots organizations on door-to-door canvassing. 

Background:

• In March 2024, the FEC confirmed that political parties may legally coordinate with outside organizations on canvassing literature and scripts without triggering federal contribution limits.
• At the time, the opinion was supported by groups on both sides of the aisle, including the AFL-CIO, former DNC official Neil Reiff, and Democrat-aligned Texas Majority PAC, represented by Democrat lawyer Marc Elias’ law firm.
• The opinion passed on a bipartisan 4-2 vote. Campaigns, parties, and outside groups across the political spectrum have relied on it ever since.
• In May 2026, the Campaign Legal Center filed suit  to vacate the opinion. 
• The RNC has filed to intervene in this lawsuit and defend the advisory opinion because the FEC currently lacks a quorum.
