WASHINGTON — Today, the Republican National Committee (RNC) and National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) filed an amicus brief in the U.S. Supreme Court fighting against left-wing efforts to remove Donald Trump from the presidential ballot in Colorado.
RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel released the following statement:
“The RNC and NRCC are fighting in the Supreme Court to ensure that the American people have the right to choose their president. Liberal judges and bureaucrats do not outweigh the voice of the voters. The effort to remove Donald Trump from the presidential ballot is an attack on our electoral system and we will not rest until this election interference is stopped.”
NRCC Chairman Richard Hudson (R-NC) released the following statement:
"The NRCC is proud to partner with the RNC to ensure voters' voices are heard, not overridden by partisan justices. In the United States of America, the people decide their president - not anyone else. This is election interference thinly veiled as a legal decision, and the Supreme Court must act to preserve voters’ right to make their own determination at the ballot box.”
Background:
- The RNC and NRCC are filing an amicus brief to the Supreme Court because American presidential candidates should be decided by American voters, not courts or government officials.
- Last month’s decision by the Supreme Court of Colorado is the kind of election interference that drives down faith in elections.
- The RNC and NRCC have filed briefs in court to fight this exact kind of interference in Minnesota and Michigan in addition to Colorado. Our arguments have been successful in Minnesota and Michigan, where Donald Trump remains on the ballot.
- The opinions of courts and government bureaucrats should not outweigh the voice of the Republican electorate as to who the Republican candidate should be.
- Section 3 of the Fourteenth Amendment was meant to exclude ex-Confederates from occupying office after the Civil War. There are numerous legal arguments for why it does not apply to Donald Trump. Using the Fourteenth Amendment in this way is just the latest episode of partisan “lawfare” aimed at Donald Trump.
- The RNC would extend this same defense to any candidate in the Republican field. We are committed to ensuring that voters – not government officials – decide their presidential candidates.
