WASHINGTON -- Today, the Republican National Committee (RNC) and Ohio Republican Party (OHGOP) announced their motion to intervene in an ongoing election integrity case in Ohio. In this case, a left-wing dark-money group is attacking Ohio’s ban on ballot harvesting.
RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel released the following statement.
“Ohio’s election laws should be decided by Ohioans, not out-of-state dark money groups. The RNC is proud to join with the OHGOP in filing this intervention to protect the Buckeye State’s ballot harvesting ban from undue left-wing attacks and ensure that Ohio voters can cast their ballots with full confidence in their electoral system.”
Background:
- A left-wing group (The League of Women Voters) is challenging a provision of House Bill 458, Ohio’s recently-signed election integrity law.
- This provision is focused on ballot harvesting, which is banned in the state of Ohio. It ensures that you have to be a voter’s family member in order to return their ballot.
- House Bill 458 already offers voters with disabilities personalized assistance by Board of Elections employees in both filling out and returning ballots
- The RNC embraces ballot harvesting when legal and helpful, but believes that states should decide their own election laws and supports the right of Ohio voters and officials to set their election policies.
- Polling shows that and 68% of voters believe that state legislatures should decide the voting rules and regulations for their state.
- The RNC has engaged in 76 election integrity lawsuits in 22 states this cycle alone and will continue filing strategic litigation to protect the vote.
