WASHINGTON,
D.C. – Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Joe Gruters
released the following statement after the RNC secured a win to enforce
commonsense voter ID requirements in North Carolina:
“The
parties' agreement to enter into a consent judgment is a major win for
election integrity and a clear rebuke of Democrats who tried to weaken basic
safeguards,” said Chairman Gruters. “For too long, North Carolina’s
State Board of Elections failed to meet basic safeguards that protect our
elections. Democrats in North Carolina want to count ballots without a driver’s
license number or Social Security Number as required by the law. The RNC will
always fight to ensure our election laws are clear, fair, and consistently
enforced."
Background:
- The North Carolina State Board
of Elections reached
an agreement
with the RNC in the case of RNC v. NCSBE.
- The Board admitted that it
allowed certain voters to register without providing a driver’s license
number or the last four digits of their Social Security Number, as
required under the Help America Vote Act (HAVA).
- Because of this agreement,
going forward, the Board may no longer accept registration forms missing
required identification information or a valid attestation.
- The Board must now collect this
information from voters who previously failed to provide it and reject
ballots from those who remain noncompliant.
- This agreement strengthens
voter ID enforcement and improves voter roll maintenance and is a part of
the RNC’s nationwide push for voter ID enforcement and voter roll
transparency.
- The RNC has also fought to
enforce mail-in ballot requirements and ensure that only
ballots with required information are counted in in Florida,
Montana,
and New
Hampshire.
