RNC Statement on April Border Encounters

Press Release

211,401 illegal immigrants were apprehended attempting to cross the U.S.-Mexico border in April, the second highest total for April in 22 years

WASHINGTON – Today, Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel released the following statement on the April border encounters:

“The southern border is in chaos because of Biden’s disastrous open border agenda, and yet he chose to make matters worse by ending Title 42. While House Republicans passed a commonsense border security bill that every single House Democrat voted against, Biden has allowed fentanyl and human smugglers to pour across the border. The border crisis is yet another resounding failure of the Biden-Harris administration."

Background:

  • More than 6.6 million illegal immigrants have crossed the border since Biden took office.
  • With Title 42 having come to an end, the Biden administration has been wholly unprepared for a surge in illegal immigration.
    • Even before the end of Title 42, Border Patrol officials reported that their facilities were already “at capacity.”
  • Illicit drugs are flowing into the country at an alarming rate, with only 5 to 10 percent being intercepted as border officials struggle to contain the smuggling.
  • 3,236 pounds of deadly fentanyl and 5,568 pounds of methamphetamine were seized at the southern border in April alone, with much more getting through.
