WASHINGTON - RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel released the following statement regarding the RNC, NRSC, and NRCC’s joint intervention into the election integrity case United States v. Texas:
“First it was Georgia, now Texas -- the Biden administration is once again attacking local elections. Democrats failed to pass their federal election takeover proposals, and now they’re trying to legally strong-arm Texas into making its elections less secure. The RNC, NRSC, NRCC, and Harris and Dallas County Republican Parties are intervening in United States v. Texas to defend Texas’s common-sense election integrity legislation against this remarkably weak lawsuit. We look forward to another win for election integrity.” -- RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel
Background:
- In September, Gov. Greg Abbott signed Senate Bill 1 into law. The Republican-led election integrity legislation contained many broadly supported policies such as:
- Expanding early voting on weekends
- Expanding bipartisan poll observation
- Strengthening voter ID requirements
- Eliminating no-longer-necessary COVID-19 emergency voting measures such as 24-hour polling stations
- Texas Democrats tried and failed to stop the law’s passage through an ill-advised publicity stunt vacation to Washington DC, during which they became a COVID super-spreader event.
- The RNC bought local TV and radio ads in Texas highlighting the election integrity debate and holding Texas Democrats accountable.
- Last week, a federal court in Texas consolidated the DOJ lawsuit with other suits previously brought by Democrats and left-wing plaintiffs. The RNC is joining the other Republican Party committees in intervening in the consolidated lawsuits.
- In Atlanta’s recent municipal elections, turnout in Fulton County was up 17% compared to 2017.
- This Texas lawsuit is even weaker than the Georgia lawsuit.
- In July, the RNC and NRSC intervened in a similar lawsuit in Georgia after the Biden administration sued similar legislation in the Peach State which Democrats falsely claimed suppressed votes.
- Democrats should be focused on the real voting rights problems in America which are found in Democrat-run counties and cities who time and time again fail to deliver well-run elections for their voters.
- Since that’s politically inconvenient, Democrats are launching baseless and politically-motivated lawsuits against states who are making meaningful reforms to improve their election processes.
