WASHINGTON, D.C. – Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Joe Gruters released the following statement congratulating Derek Merrin on his victory in the Republican primary for Ohio's 9th Congressional District:

“Congratulations to Derek Merrin, an America First commonsense leader focused on lowering costs for Ohio families,” said Chairman Gruters. “He will dominate against Marcy Kaptur, a career politician who has spent more than four decades in Washington backing tax hikes on Ohioans and embracing insane policies that would allow men to play in women’s sports. Kaptur doesn’t stand a chance in November.”

Background: 

• President Trump won the seat by over 10 points, and it is a true “toss-up” race.
• Marcy Kaptur has:
• Voted for a tax increase on Ohioans under every president since Ronald Reagan.
• Took thousands from a pro-transgender PAC.
• Supported allowing men to play in women’s sports.
• Voted for the largest tax hike since World War II when she voted against the Working Families Tax Cuts.
• Opposed voter ID, even though over 70% of Ohioans support it.
• Shut down DHS for 76 days, allowing thousands of critical TSA agents, Coast Guardsmen, and Secret Service agents to work without pay.
