RNC Statement on S.1

WASHINGTON — Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel released the following statement on the Democrats' S.1 power grab:

"The Democrats’ S. 1 is an unprecedented partisan power grab that seeks to undermine the sanctity of the ballot by codifying a federal takeover of local elections. The Democrat politicians act seeks to eviscerate widely supported voter ID requirements and use taxpayer dollars to bankroll political campaigns. Americans understand states should run their own elections -- not unelected bureaucrats in Washington, DC. As Democrats continue their assault on election integrity, the Republican Party remains committed to making it easier to vote and harder to cheat."

Background:

68% of voters believe that state legislatures should decide the voting rules and regulations for their state.
By a 33 point margin, American voters believe that voting in their area is “easy” and want the main objective of any reforms to focus on making sure elections are “fair and free of voter fraud.”
75% of voters, including 69% of Black voters, support voter ID laws, a finding that is consistent with polls for years.
More than 130 election advocacy organization and non-profit leaders have said H.R. 1/ S. 1 would “dramatically alter the First Amendment protections that Americans have enjoyed since the founding of our country.”
H.R. 1/S. 1 includes public financing for congressional campaigns -- a proposal which would cost $3 billion over the next ten years.
