We finally heard from the White House why Joe Biden falsely claimed his student loan bailout was passed by Congress when it wasn’t.
The White House now claims he was talking about “reducing the deficit” in the so-called “Inflation Reduction Act.” The problem with that excuse is Biden’s comments are on tape, and he obviously wasn’t talking about that:
Here’s the relevant portion of the transcript: “The other piece what we’re trying to do is, you’re probably aware, I’ve just signed a law that is being challenged by my Republican colleagues … What we provided for is if you went to school, if you qualify for a Pell grant, you qualify for 2,000 – I mean excuse me – you qualify for twenty thousand dollars in debt forgiveness. Secondly, if you don’t have one of those loans, you just get ten thousand written off. It’s passed, I got it passed by a vote or two and it’s in effect. And already a total of, I think, it’s now thirteen million people have applied for that service.”
He was not talking about deficit reduction, he was not talking about the so-called “Inflation Reduction Act,” and he explicitly said the student loan bailout itself was signed into law.
The White House’s spin is not an “explanation” of what Biden said. It’s an insult to anyone with common sense.
