Biden's Nord Stream 2 Hypocrisy

Rapid Response

If Joe Biden has learned one thing in his over 45 years in Washington, it is how to say one thing and do the opposite.

Need an example? Biden is meeting with NATO secretary General Jens Stoltenberg while his actions on Nord Stream 2 threaten the security of our allies in Europe.

A U.S. State Department spokesperson claimed “the Biden Administration has been clear that the Nord Stream 2 pipeline … threatens European energy security and that of Ukraine and eastern flank NATO Allies and partners.”

“Has been clear”? How? By waiving sanctions on the project?

Nord Stream 2 strengthens Putin’s economic and political influence. That’s why many of our European allies and NATO members oppose the project and have criticized Biden for waiving sanctions.

  • In 2016, eight EU countries – the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Poland, Slovakia, Romania, and Lithuania – signed a letter objecting to the Nord Stream 2 project.
  • In 2021, the European Parliament voted overwhelmingly – 581 to 50 – to block work on the pipeline.
  • Poland’s government spokesman Piotr Muller said Biden’s move “is definitely not positive from the security point of view, as we know perfectly that Nord Stream 2 is not only a business project – it is mostly a geopolitical project.”
  • The Ukrainian parliament overwhelmingly backed a resolution calling on U.S. lawmakers to override Biden’s decision to waive sanctions.

Biden is not being tough on Russia or improving the national security of the U.S. and our allies. Instead he is giving Russia a major geopolitical win and failing the American people.
