Under Biden, Low-Income Americans Face Rising Rents, Surging Food Prices, And Overrun Homeless Shelters

BIDEN’S AMERICA: GROWING HOMELESSNESS, SURGING FOOD PRICES, AND CROWDED SHELTERS

• Biden and Democrats’ far-left policies have led to rising rent prices, growing food insecurity, and overwhelmed homeless shelters.
• With prices for everything from food and rent to gas and electricity rising drastically, low-income Americans, especially those at risk of homelessness, are getting hit the hardest.
  • Low-income families are hit the hardest by higher inflation rates, meaning these Americans are bearing the brunt of Biden’s price hike.
  • Low-income Americans allocate a “bigger share” of their spending on high-inflation goods like food, gas, and housing, making them more vulnerable to rising prices.
• As a result, 73 percent of low-income Americans – households making less than $40,000 a year – are worried about maintaining their standard of living.
  • Meanwhile, as working-class Americans struggle to make ends meet, Biden and every Democrat in Congress just passed a bill to raise taxes on low-income Americans and send a supersized IRS after them.

AMERICANS ARE STRUGGLING TO KEEP A ROOF OVER THEIR HEAD

• Biden’s price hike is making it harder for millions of Americans to afford rent, putting many families at greater risk of becoming homeless.
• Nationwide, rents jumped 6.3 percent in July compared to last year, rising at their fastest pace since 1986 and putting housing “out of reach for more Americans.”
• Median national rent reached a new record high in June of nearly $1,900, up 14 percent or $232 since last year according to Realtor.com.
  • A $100 increase in median rent corresponds to a 9 percent increase in the estimated homelessness rate according to the Government Accountability Office.
  • In June, 13.7 million Americans reported having fallen behind on their rent or mortgage payments – a 7 percent increase since April.
  • 4.6 million Americans said they were “very” or “somewhat” likely to face eviction or foreclosure in the next two months, marking an astonishing 32 percent increase since April.
• Thanks to Biden’s price hike, more Americans are struggling to keep a roof over their head.
  • Jeannie Jansen of Wyoming, New York, who received a foreclosure notice in early July: “I busted my butt for years to have what we have. I went without heat this winter. I’ve gone without everything. And it’s still not enough because prices are so high.”
  • Venus Lopez of Tucson, Arizona: “With prices of everything going up, it’s becoming a challenge to even maintain what we have. Finding an affordable apartment keeps getting more unrealistic.”

GROCERY BILLS ARE SKYROCKETING BECAUSE OF BIDENFLATION

• Bidenflation is causing grocery bills to skyrocket, forcing many Americans to either resort to store brands, cut back on essentials, or do without certain types of food altogether.
  • In July, groceries jumped 13 percent since last year, marking the largest increase in over 43 years.
  • Prices for eggs are up an astounding 38 percent while items like chicken, milk, and lunchmeats have soared 17 percent, 15 percent, and 18 percent, respectively.
• Because of these rising prices, more Americans are turning to food banks and government assistance to feed their families:
  • Food banks across the country are facing a “drumbeat of increasing demand, month over month” according to Katie Fitzgerald, president of Feeding America.
  • In Arizona, St. Mary’s Food Bank recently served 78 percent more families in one week compared to the same week last year.
  • Nikki Jones of Monrovia, Maryland: “I definitely don’t want to be spending $1,600 a month on groceries.”
  • Susan Pynchon of Colville, Washington: “Groceries are going up a heck of a lot faster than [my cost-of-living adjustment].”
• The Biden administration is threatening to make matters worse for low-income children by withholding funding for the federal school lunch program from schools unless they comply with the left’s definition of “gender-identity.”

HOMELESS SHELTERS ARE BECOMING OVERWHELMED

• With rising rents pushing low-income Americans out of their homes, homeless shelters are struggling to meet the demand for emergency housing, forcing some shelters to place at-risk families on waitlists.
• Staff at homeless shelters in at least 15 states report “dramatic increase[s]” in the number of Americans seeking assistance this year.
  • Waitlists at some shelters have “doubled or tripled” in only a matter of months.
  • Many shelters are even offering services for people who have “steady, even good-paying” jobs but cannot afford the rising cost of living thanks to Bidenflation.
• Biden’s border crisis is also worsening the homeless crisis.
  • All of Washington, D.C.’s homeless shelters have reached “capacity” as busloads of illegal immigrants enter the city thanks to Biden’s failed border policies.
• Gary Leigh, founder of a homeless shelter in Shelby, North Carolina: “We opened in December (2021). Since then, we have been at capacity pretty much the whole time.”

BIDEN’S PRICE HIKE IS CRUSHING MINORITIES AND THE ELDERLY

• As prices continue to climb, Bidenflation is having a disproportionate impact on the elderly and Black and Hispanic communities.
• A study from the Richmond Fed found that Black families experience “higher inflation rates” and face 13.5 percent higher inflation volatility compared to white households.
  • Black, Hispanic, and Latino households spend more of their income on energy and food than other demographics, making them increasingly vulnerable to rising prices.
  • More than one in five Black adults and a quarter of Native American adults report having “serious problems affording medical care or prescription drugs.”
• Inflation is also crushing older Americans who are on a fixed income.
  • A recent report found that roughly half of older Americans are unable to afford their “essential expenses.”
  • 1.5 million retirees have rejoined the labor market in part because of “rising costs.”

BIDEN’S WAR ON WOMEN: BABY FORMULA AND FEMININE PRODUCT SHORTAGES CONTINUE

• On top of crushing inflation, women and their newborn children continue to face shortages of and rising prices for feminine hygiene products and baby formula despite Biden’s promise to fix the supply chain crisis.
• Under Biden, prices for menstrual products like tampons and pads have increased 11 percent and 9 percent, respectively.
• Nationally, more than 31 percent of baby powder formula remains out-of-stock, forcing parents to drive 1,000 miles in some cases to feed their children.
• While families scramble to feed their newborns, the Biden administration has no answers despite knowing about this crisis since last fall.
  • In July, a Biden administration official said, “We are months — months — away from an end to these shortages.”

BIDEN MOCKS STRUGGLING AMERICANS

• Meanwhile, as low-income Americans bear the brunt of rising prices, the Biden administration couldn’t care less about the struggles of working-class families.
  • During the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, Biden laughed at Americans struggling to afford food and gas.
  • White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain dismissed inflation and supply chain issues as “high class problems.”
  • Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said “that is hilarious” when asked about the administration’s plans to lower gas prices.
  • Then-White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki sarcastically mocked Biden’s supply chain crisis as a “tragedy.”
  • White House official Liz Reynolds downplayed supply shortages as simply lack of choice, saying “you won’t be able to get the jacket in 15 colors.”
• While the Biden administration tries to discount inflation and shift blame, Americans know that Biden’s radical tax-and-spend agenda is responsible for the pain they feel in their pocketbooks.
